Duties

Help

Entry level duties: As a Lineman Apprentice, you are expected to complete a 4-year training program that combines on-the-job training, classroom, and self-study training during off-duty hours designed to train, appraise, and develop the apprentice as they progress to become a fully competent Journeyman Lineman. Work outdoors under all prevailing weather conditions during the day or night. Hazards include working around high voltage electrical equipment (69 kV and higher) and machinery with moving parts. Active climbing, lifting, working in strained positions. Work from ladders, scaffolds, and man-lift devices. May work from substation's support structures which requires the use of appropriate fall protection equipment. Regularly lift and carry items weighing 50 pounds or more. Works as a member of a crew. Requires overnight travel of 14 or more days per month. Full performance level Journeyman Lineman duties to include but not limited to proficient climbing, operating line equipment safe crane set up including rigging selection and understanding wire pulling operations.

  • Must be a student, accepted for enrollment or enrolled, and seeking a degree or certificate in a qualifying educational institution on at least a half-time basis.
  • Must be in good academic standing.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age or older.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.

  • Suitable for Federal employment, as determined by a background investigation.
  • Interns will be on a trial period for the duration of the appointment.
  • A Pathways Internship Participant Agreement is required.

Qualifications

Qualifications:
Pathways Intern Employment candidates must meet the qualifications consistent with OPM qualification standards applicable to the position being filled by the closing date of the announcement. See Education Section for education requirements for this position.

You MUST be either currently enrolled, or accepted for enrollment into a qualifying educational program beginning the next available school term to qualify for this program. Enrollment must be in an accredited high school, community college, vocational or technical program, undergraduate, graduate, or professional program that culminates in a diploma, certificate or degree.

EXPLANATION OF TERMS
An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as 30 semester hours, 45-quarter hours, or the equivalent in an accredited college or university or 36 weeks at an accredited business, technical, vocational, or qualifying educational institution for at least 20 classroom hours per week. An academic year of graduate education is defined as 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement or the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 academic year of full-time study.

"Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community- based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

For this position you must be a student in a program leading to a certificate or major in a qualifying field.

Conversion: Pathways Interns may be converted to a term or permanent position upon program completion. This is not automatic nor guaranteed; it is at the discretion of the employing office.

To be eligible for conversion, an Intern must: (1) be converted within 120 days of successful degree completion; (2) be a U.S. citizen; (3) complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Program while enrolled as a half/full-time degree/certificate-seeking student, or meet exception; (4) meet the qualification standards for the position to which converted; (5) receive a favorable recommendation by an official of the agency; and (6) meet agency-specific requirements, as specified in the Participant Agreement.
