The incumbent serves as Museum Technician for both Longfellow House-Washington's Headquarters National Historic Site (LONG) and John Fitzgerald Kennedy National Historic Site (JOFI). Both sites are furnished historic house museums with over 36,000 historic objects on exhibit and in storage. These collections include fine and decorative art objects, archeological and architectural artifacts, textile collections, domestic objects and other utilitarian items. LONG also maintains an extensive study collection, with an estimated 650,000 archival/manuscript items from the 17th to 20th centuries. These collections are extensively utilized by outside researchers, educators, institutions, and staff. This position provides a full range of museum support work in the collection and archives and carries out responsibilities in the four museum functions of collections, exhibits, research and education.

  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period..
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 1 night per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-08/23/2021-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: utilize museum collections management methods, standards, and techniques; perform object preservation techniques; perform historical research; maintain cataloging and record keeping databases of museum collections; use hand tools to care for museum collections; communicate information in a clear and concise manner, including writing reports, exhibits, and responding to inquiries. . You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full year of graduate study in one of the following fields: art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to the position to be filled. (One year of graduate education is 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours). Course work In fields other than those specified may be accepted if It clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skllls necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled. You must include transcripts.

I have NOT completed 1 full year of specialized experience as described in 1A above or the one year of graduate study in a field directly-related to the work of this position as shown in 1B above, but I have an equivalent combination of such education and experience. For example, I have 6 months of the specialized experience (50% of the experience requirement), and (14 semester hours or 21 quarter hours) of directly-related graduate level college study in an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

Physical Demands: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking and bending often required. Heavy and irregularly-shaped items (e.g. boxes and collection items up to 50 pounds) must be lifted or moved frequently.

Working Conditions: Most of the work is performed in a museum environment of exhibit, office, research area, and storage facility. Frequent visits are made to the reference library, visitor center, and exhibit rooms at the two sites. Some travel to other NPS and non-NPS sites, facilities and museums, as well as to training and meetings is required. Occasional work with material which are dusty or stored with protective chemicals may require the use of dust masks, gloves, or other protective devices. The incumbent may occasionally perform fieldwork in adverse weather conditions.
