Help

This position is located in the Utilities Shops Branch, Facilities Management and Engineering, Grand Canyon National Park. The purpose of the position is to effectively manage the continuous operation, maintenance, and rehabilitation of water and wastewater utility systems including potable water pumping, storage, transmission, treatment and distribution systems; wastewater collection and treatment systems, waste water treatment and reclamation plants and storage, chlorination systems, and state certified potable water, and wastewater quality testing laboratories within the most challenging and arduous environment. The work requires the ability to supervise a staff of skilled workers involved in the operation, maintenance and repair of water arid waste water systems and their controls. Incumbent is occasionally called upon to oversee the operation of utility systems in Parks around the state by providing the license for the utilities operation in the temporary absence of a licensed operator. The incumbent is responsible to ensure the water and waste water systems remain in full compliance of the Federal, State and other regulatory requirement.

  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • Occupancy of government quarters is required.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You must possess and maintain a current Water Treatment Operators Certificate, and you must be able to secure and maintain a valid Arizona Department of Health Services Class 2 Water Treatment Operators Certificate. Please indicate the level of certification you currently possess.
  • You must possess and maintain a current Wastewater Treatment Operators Certificate, and you must be able to secure and maintain a valid Arizona Department of Health Services Class 2 Wastewater Treatment Operators Certificate. Please indicate the level of certification you currently possess.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 2 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old.

A Recruitment Incentive May Be Authorized for a newly selected employee when appointed to a permanent, temporary, or term position. A Federal employee who is transferring to the National Park Service from another component, bureau or Federal agency and who does not meet the conditions under 5 CFR §575.102 is not eligible for a recruitment incentive.

A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.

Physical Demands: The work requires considerable walking, standing on concrete floors, and climbing stairways and ladders. Light to moderate physical effort is necessary to turn valves and controls. The incumbent frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted, and occasionally lifts and carries heavier items with assistance of other employees or with the help of lifting devices. Hiking in and out of the canyon or accessing remote water sources maybe required.


Working Conditions: Work is performed indoors and outdoors in temperatures ranging from -20 to 120 degrees, elevations ranging from 2500 ft to 8500 ft above sea level. and in all types of weather conditions. The supervisor may be exposed to chemicals, sewage. disease organisms,
mechanical-and electrical hazards, and wet and slippery surfaces. The employee is transported by foot, helicopter, fixed winged aircraft. and mules across to remote sites.

Area/Housing Information: This position is stationed at the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park located in Northwest Arizona, approximately 60 miles north of Williams and 85 miles Northwest of Flagstaff at an elevation of 7,000 feet. Temperatures range from approximately 85 degrees in the summer to 17 degrees in the winter. Grand Canyon Village has schools K-12, a daycare center, post office, general store, banking facilities. churches, a recreation center, a clinic with resident physicians and several restaurants. The park community consists of some 2,000 people, including employees of the NPS and concessionaires and their family members. There are often employment opportunities for family members in the park and surrounding areas. The park community is small enough that many employees choose to walk or bike from their homes to work. Complete shopping, educational, medical and professional services are available in Williams and Flagstaff. Recreational opportunities include hiking, river rafting, fishing, cross-country and downhill skiing, and golfing in nearby communities.
