Provides preventive, routine, and emergency maintenance to the Arch's two TRAM systems. Duties include and are not limited to: performing inspections and maintenance from a moving (cow catcher) maintenance cart which is located outside the capsules to heights up to 630 feet. Diagnosis and repairs electrical control panels and equipment for the motor generator sets, hoist motor, capsule level motors, governors, and door operator motors. Repair or replaces motors, starters, auxiliary control circuit, and inspect, repair magnetic, proximately, 3 and 4 way switches. Make sensitive adjustments to capsule doors, capsule leveler motors and the Tram Leveling controllers (TLC), which control capsule leveling outputs. Paint Tram capsules and associated equipment. Lubricates and keeps in a clean condition all pertinent parts of the equipment. Daily use Tram Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) systems to monitor, troubleshoot, operate and repair respective Tram system. Makes bearing replacements on a regular basis. Shorten hoisting, governor and compensating cables. Accomplishment of many repairs through extensive rigging with chain hoists, while wearing PPE equipment to include harnesses, lanyards, steel toe boots, gloves and eye protection. Work is sometimes accomplished in very restrictive areas of the Arch legs either from the maintenance cart or balancing on structural steel framing members. Working heights can be as high as 630 feet above ground. Responds immediately to emergency calls when there is a breakdown in electrical/mechanical equipment on the TRAM system. Troubleshoots the TRAM equipment to determine the cause of failure and makes immediate repairs to return the equipment back into service. Assists emergency response crew's in passenger evacuation as required in the event breakdown cannot be immediately corrected.
Physical Demands: Must erect and climb ladders, scaffolds, and work off open structural steel in the Arch interior leg. Must use a safety belt occasionally. Has to climb 1,076 steps in the Arch in an emergency. Must be able to carry a load of 75 pounds for a distance of 200 feet. Due to structural design of the interior of the Arch, must be able to crawl through narrow passages and climb structural members which consistently vary from the horizontal and vertical.
Working Conditions: Conditions vary from the clean, well-lighted, air-conditioned areas of the shops to the dusty, poorly lighted areas of the interior legs of the Arch. Some locations of equipment, under the floor of the Arch observation deck, are extremely hazardous due to the cramped and crowded conditions where the equipment is installed. Temperatures fluctuate from very hot in the summer to very cold in the winter. While working on pumps, consideration must be given to the possible electrical hazards, along with the wet and slippery conditions. Incumbent is required to ride the tops of elevator cars and the front of the Trams (cow catcher) platform which changes from horizontal to 80 degrees from level
