Big Bend National Park encompasses 801,000 acres of Chihuahuan Desert with varied scenery and diversity of plant and animal life. The park community consists of 250 people, including employees of the NPS, Concession, Border Patrol, Postal Service, School, and their families living in 4 housing areas; Panther Junction (PJ), Chisos Basin, Castalon, and Rio Grande Village. A state-accredited elementary school (K-8) is located at Panther Junction. The park has a post office, gas stations, camper stores, restaurant, and lodge.
Recreational opportunities include hiking, bird watching, photography, backcountry camping, bicycling, and river rafting. An active employee/community association sponsors social events throughout the year.
Elevation in the park varies from 7825 to 1850 ft. The climate is generally pleasant with hot summers (90-110+ degrees F.) and mild winters (30-50 degrees F.).
Terlingua (a small town 24 miles away from PJ) has a state-accredited high school (no bus service), lodging, restaurants, hardware store, small grocery and gift stores, churches and a bank. Lajitas has limited shopping, lodging, restaurants, golf course and churches. Alpine, Texas (100 miles from PJ) has most necessities, including supermarkets, variety of stores, a hospital, pharmacies, churches, a movie theater, and a university. The nearest larger cities are Midland/Odessa (225 miles) and El Paso (325 miles).

Major Duties:
Incumbent conducts cultural resource management activities in both front country and backcountry areas. Serves as the park's principal advisor in the management of cultural resources, involving a wide range of duties associated with history, archeology, historic architecture, cultural anthropology, cultural landscapes, and natural and cultural museum collections including archives. Represents the superintendent when working with others on cultural resource stewardship issues.
Serves as the Contracting Officer's Representative for cultural resource projects conducted through contracts, interagency agreements, and cooperative agreements.
Develops and maintains effective working relationships with seventeen Native American tribes, other traditional associations, and related groups, agencies, and the public. Incumbent maintains peer relationships with researchers, subject matter experts, and resource managers of other agencies and cooperating universities, in order to encourage and facilitate cooperative regional resources management strategies. Recent projects include working with partners in historic adobe structures preservation, prehistoric archeological field studies and museum collections management.
Maintains liaison with the State Historic Preservation Office. Serves as the NHPA 106 compliance coordinator and manages the review of projects to assure protection of cultural resources and compliance with applicable federal laws such as the National Historic Preservation Act, Archeological Resources Protection Act, Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, and National Environmental Policy Act.
Incumbent provides technical guidance on the preservation and maintenance of historic structures, both adobe and Mission 66 buildings
Manages park museum collections. Coordinates documentation, preservation, protection, exhibition, and use of park collections whether housed in the park or at an offsite repository according to NPS guidelines.
Basic Education Requirement for Historian:
Degree: history; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history.

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Basic Education Requirement for cultural anthropology:
Degree: appropriate field of anthropology.

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major, or a combination of courses totaling at least 24 semester hours in an appropriate field of anthropology, or related course work, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Basic Education Requirement for Archeologist:
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
