Help

As a Center Director within the Geologic Hazards Science Center (GHSC), some of your specific duties will include:

  • Ensure effective supervision and development of all GHSC staff, resolve personnel problems and take necessary disciplinary action as necessary.
  • Manage GHSC resources in accordance with applicable policies and good management practice and ensure acquisition and distribution of resources to effectively support GHSC staff and objectives
  • Develop GHSC scientific programs/strategies and foster integrated science partnerships within GHSC and with other USGS, government, and private science entities
  • Actively establish and maintain contacts with external organizations and ensure dissemination of critical information throughout GHSC
  • Represent GHSC, Rocky Mountain Region, and USGS at national and regional meetings, seminars and conferences and actively and equitably represent and advocate for all GHSC scientists and scientific capabilities

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR GS-1313, GEOPHYSICIST: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geophysicist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.).

B. A combination of education and experience -- at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR GS-1350, GEOLOGIST: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geologist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in geology. In addition to the geology course work included in the degree, it must also have included or been supplemented by 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in geology plus 20 additional semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-15:

In addition to the basic education requirements, you must have 1-year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service.

Examples include: 1) Supervising and managing 50 or more staff engaged in the execution of a physical science project or program; 2) developing or directly influencing the scientific, administrative and technical policies, standards, procedures, and/or instructions necessary for the effective direction and operation of a geology and/or geophsysics-based science program; 3) resolving critical problems resulting from the operational complexities of a multi-disciplinary science study; 4) serving as the principal contact with other Federal agencies, state and local government organizations, and other groups that may affect the success of a science program. The work involved advising or counseling other technical experts in fields related to geology and/or geophysics.
