Duties

Help
  • Drive and operate trucks with gross vehicle weight of up to 56,000 pounds plus 35' sliding axle trailer. This requires the ability to operate the various levers used to operate the power take off unit and hydraulic lift.
  • Drive and operate pickup trucks, panels, 1/2-ton trucks, 4 x 4 jeeps, sweeper and brush chippers.
  • Drive, load and operate equipment for hauling and spreading sand, gravel, dirt, rocks, tree trimmings and other materials as needed to repair and maintain roads.
  • Operate backhoe and farm type tractors with a variety of attachments.
  • Remove downed trees using chain saws, install culverts and drain ditches and keep them open and free of debris.

Qualifications

This is a Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. Incumbent will not work more than 50 weeks nor less than 26 weeks per year. Approximate length of furlough will be 2 weeks.

To qualify, there is no specific length of training or experience required; however, your resume must demonstrate enough experience to show your ability to perform the duties of a Motor Vehicle Operator without more than normal supervision. Examples of such experience include: (1) operating diesel-powered 56,000 GVWR dump trucks; (2) operating various heavy equipment to move, load and spread dirt, aggregate base, and other materials; (3) loading and unloading supplies with forklifts or a loader; (4) performing operator maintenance on vehicles (checking fluid levels, tire pressure, cleaning and washing vehicles).


SELECTIVE FACTOR: This position has a Selective Placement Factor (screen-out) which will be used to determine minimum qualifications for this position. Applicants not possessing this Selective Placement Factor will be found ineligible for this position. The Selective Placement Factor is: a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Manual Transmission, Air Brakes and Tanker endorsements.

Part-time or Unpaid Experience: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held.

Physical Effort: Moderate to heavy physical effort in climbing on tractors to hook up service lines, lower landing gears, and in climbing on the trailer to load or tie down cargo. Considerable physical effort may be required in backing of vehicles, to change tires, and make limited emergency repairs. Required to frequently lift items weighing over 50 pounds. Climbing of ladders, scaffolding, and working in and around equipment and power tools.

Work Environment: Majority of the work is performed outdoors where incumbent will be exposed to extreme hot and cold temperatures. Required to operate equipment in all types of weather conditions and on a variety of road surfaces. Subject to noise, vibration and exhaust fumes from equipment and vehicles, and is exposed to the danger of serious accidents.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. If selected you will be required to submit a valid driver's license prior to entry on duty.
  • You must possess and maintain a current Class A, Type Commercial Driver's License with Manual Transmission, Air Brakes and Tanker endorsements.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 5 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
