Salary: GS-7 - $43,251 per annum to $56,222 per annum
GS-9: $52,905 per annum - $68,777 per annum

Has program responsibility for prescribed fire, fuels management, smoke management, and wildland fire within New River Gorge NR. Primary responsibilities of the positions are (1) preparing and carrying out prescribed fire plans, fire effects, manual and mechanical hazardous fuel treatments, and smoke and wildland fire use monitoring; and, (2) wildland fire preparedness and suppression.
Provide professional expertise in the development and implementation of multiple resource objectives.
Develops and analyzes fuels treatment alternatives to support management decisions while adhering to applicable laws, regulations, policies and guidelines.
Serves as a member of an interdisciplinary team planning, developing, and implementing land management plans, compliance documents and agreements.
Participate in the development, review, and modification of the park fire management plan.
Implements and administers fire activities, wildland fire use, and fuels management activities to ensure targets are achieved, management objectives are met and mitigation measures are adequate.
In addition to fuels management operations, supports wildland fire suppression activities.
Also conducts field surveys to determine the location of hazardous fuel conditions.
Assists in wildland prevention and preparedness programs and activities.
Prepares and reviews plans such as annual operating plans, training plans, fire suppression plans, safety plans, etc.
Directs and performs wildland fire suppression efforts in initial attack and in follow-up actions to safely and effectively control wildland fires
First Aid and CPR training will be provided.
Please note: This is a permanent Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectees will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectees are guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. Expect the non-pay to be 6-10 pay periods and occur in November to February.
Physical Demands: Work is normally sedentary. Field work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying of items weighing over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items, and similar strenuous activities requiring at least average agility and dexterity.
Working Conditions: Work is performed both in-doors (office) and out-of-doors (field work). Office conditions require long periods of sitting, working with computers and general lifting, and bending and reaching. Field work conditions are performed in various conditions and often involve steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, covered with vegetation, and in smoky conditions. Temperatures may vary. Risks include smoke inhalation, fire entrapment, snake or insect bites and stings, exposure to excessive machinery noise, and falling and rolling material. Personnel must adjust and cope with exposure to adverse weather elements, dust and smoke, poor sleeping and eating conditions and unpredictable sets of circumstances. The hazardous nature of the work requires that personal protective equipment be work (boots, hardhat, gloves, flame resistant clothing, etc.)
Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.
Area Information: This position is located at the New River Gorge National River, which is in rural southern West Virginia. The temperatures range from below freezing in the winter to above 90 degrees during the peak of the summer. The region routinely sees abundant precipitation in the form of rain and snow and the humidity can be high during the summer months. Rental housing is available in the local community and is moderately priced. There are multiple small cities and towns in the area that provide a wide range of amenities. Outdoor recreation opportunities are abundant in the area and include but are not limited to hiking, mountain biking, climbing, whitewater rafting, fishing, and hunting. This recruitment notice constitutes the required 30 days advanced notice for testing requirements. NOTE: Arduous fitness (WCT-Pack Test) will consist of completing a three-mile hike, within 45 minutes, while carrying a 45 pound pack. A time of 45 minutes, the passing score for the test, approximates an aerobic fitness score of 45, the established standard for firefighters. Applicants shall be disqualified for appointment if they fail to meet any physical requirement.
Valid state driver's license is required and a condition of employment.
You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
Normal work period will be 80 hours in a biweekly pay period. However, you may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.

Subject to frequent extended travel 14 days a month particularly during fire season, and you must obtain a government charge card for travel.
