Duties

Help

This position is primarily located in the Longmire (Paradise) area of Mount Rainier National Park. During the winter months, there are approximately 25 medical calls, 5-10 search and rescue missions, one to three multi-casualty or multi-agency operations annually. This is a non-supervisory position, the incumbent will perform a wide range of winter related activities.

  • Provide medical care at the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or a state EMT level or higher.
  • Perform emergency medical care in response to various accident scenes, rescue environments and other emergencies involving injury and illness.
  • Conduct snow surveys to training certifications and assess snow pack and avalanche danger.
  • Provide winter safety information to all users conducting Preventative Search and Rescue (PSAR).
  • Maintain all signs and ropes associated with the winter sledding hill at Paradise.
  • Issue backcountry permits and register climbers.
  • Conduct backcountry patrols on snowshoes or skis.
  • Operate ambulances and other emergency vehicles in a safe and skilled manner.
  • Maintains EMS and rescue equipment in a response-ready state and regularly performs related work projects as assigned during daily shift.
  • Performs tasks as assigned under incident command system (ICS) and interacts routinely with outside agency emergency personnel.

  • American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE), American Avalanche Association (AAA) or Canadian Avalanche Association (CAA) certifications.
  • Provide medical care at the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or a state EMT level or higher.
  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.

Qualifications

Selective Placement Factor (Mandatory Screen-Out): Emergency Medical Services.
Applicants must have an unrestricted certification or license EMT, AEMT, Park Medic or Paramedic. You must provide documentation in your application package which includes where you obtained and the expiration date.

Selective Placement Factor (Mandatory Screen-Out): Emergency Winter Response/Avalanche Certifications.
Applicants must possess one or more of the following, AIREE(American Alpine Institute), AAA(American Avalanche Association), or CAA (Canadian Avalanche Association) recognized course in AIARE1, PRO1 or higher. You must provide documentation in your application package which includes where you obtained and the expiration date.

To qualify for this position, you must demonstrate that you possess either the specialized experience or the education as described below. Equivalent combinations of experience and education may also be used to qualify.
For the GS-05 grade level

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One year (12 months) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level in the federal service. Specialized experience demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of a Park Ranger (Law Enforcement). Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park-related work. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to, the following: Park guide or tour leader, Law enforcement or investigative work, Archeological or historical preservation research work; Forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; Management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations.

EDUCATION: 4 year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours of related course work. One year of full time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION/SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Equivalent combinations of education and experience. If you are qualifying on a combination of education and experience, or education alone you must provide a copy of your transcripts in your application package.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Physical Demands: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking, driving, bending, and the incumbent must have the ability to routinely carry backpacks of up to 50 pounds in steep terrain and in adverse weather conditions.

Working Conditions: The work is performed in a setting in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness, e.g., high or low temperatures, confined spaces or adverse weather conditions.
