The incumbent serves Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve as an advisor in the management of natural resources and is responsible for program development and implementation in the area of terrestrial ecology. This position resides within the Resources Management Division and provides supervision and oversight for the park's terrestrial ecology program.
The person in this position works as a team member of a multi-disciplinary resources team, including collaboration with the park's marine ecology program, inventory and monitoring program, and cultural resources program.
The incumbent develops and implements long range plans for the inventory, evaluation, documentation, preservation, research, and interpretation of the park's natural resources.
They identify research needs, prepare statements of work, and provide oversight for research projects carried out by a team of science staff and collaborators.
They collect, analyze, and synthesize scientific information from research and monitoring projects, with focus on applied research questions to inform resource management decisions.
The person in the position communicates technical knowledge and findings to the scientific community, National Park Service staff, park visitors, stakeholders, and general public in various formats.
The position acts as the park's research coordinator and wilderness coordinator.
The incumbent carries out administrative duties, including supervision, budget management, and contract and agreement oversight.
Location Information:
Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve has unsurpassed beauty and amazing glaciers and wildlife! Park headquarters is located at Bartlett Cove, at the southern edge of Glacier Bay. Gustavus, a community of just over 400 in winter and 600 in summer, is connected to the park headquarters by a paved road. Bartlett Cove and Gustavus are accessible only by boat and air. Gustavus has a school (K-12) with about 75 students, post office, two churches, clinic, two very small grocery stores, thrift store, and a restaurant that is open 7 months of the year. One TV station is received in Gustavus, although satellite TV service and DVDs are available. A few radio stations are received. The nearest large city is Juneau, which has most amenities of any large city. Daily air taxi service is available to Juneau and other communities. The Alaska State Ferry has periodic service to Gustavus for passengers and vehicles. Most supplies and equipment are transported by ferry or flown in from Juneau. There is a wealth of outdoor activities available including boating, kayaking, fishing, hunting, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing. Glacier Bay is a temperate rainforest so the weather can be very rainy but temperatures are mild compared to the rest of Alaska. Average rainfall is 50-70 inches and average temperatures range from 20-30 degrees in winter and 55-65 degrees in summer.

This is a full-time permanent career/career conditional - seasonal position subject to release and recall procedures. It includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, you will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks up to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. You are guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year. The main work season is March through November, but these dates can vary due to project requirements or weather conditions. Anticipated non-pay, non-work time is approximately 2 to 4 weeks during the months of December through February. You may be recalled for training or other work-related requirements during your scheduled non-pay time.

Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-06/15/2020-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To qualify for this GS-0408-12 position you must meet the following basic education requirement by close of the announcement:
You must have a bachelor's degree, or higher degree, from an accredited college or university or in biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences. (You must include a copy of your transcripts).
In addition to the basic education requirement listed above, to qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Examples of qualifying specialized experience include duties involved in conducting research to understand factors affecting terrestrial ecosystems and publishing manuscripts and reports to communicate study findings; designing and implementing terrestrial scientific monitoring programs through data collection, analysis, and reporting; working on preparation of terrestrial resource action plans and strategies needed to successfully manage and protect natural ecosystems and environmental conditions; providing technical assistance to natural resource managers regarding terrestrial management policy and science-based conservation. (You must include the number of hours worked per week within your resume.)
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).
