Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.
Major Duties for Student Trainee (Anthropology), GS-199-05 Subsistence:
The incumbent will provide subsistence program support to facilitate implementation of agency mandates and operations pertaining to the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act and the Federal Subsistence Management Program. In this capacity they help to analyze proposed regulatory actions, acquire and disseminate stakeholder opinions, and assist Alaska NPS units in meeting their subsistence-related programmatic needs. Major duties include:
Conduct ethnographic or interdisciplinary subsistence-related research pertinent to one or more subsistence park units in Alaska as part of his/her academic thesis.
Provide administrative assistance to parks to prepare for, execute, and report on meetings of the Subsistence Resource Commissions (SRCs).
Attend and participate in monthly Subsistence Advisory Council (SAC) meetings and serve on in-person SAC and Subsistence Resource Commission Chairs Workshop planning subcommittee.
Maintain, organize, and compile regional and historic subsistence files in both electronic and paper media; general records management.
Assist in maintaining the NPS Subsistence webpage.
Major Duties for Student Trainee (Anthropology), GS-199-07 Subsistence - Includes duties above plus the following:

This position has a mixed work schedule. Work schedule will be part-time (up to twenty hours) during the academic year, and up to 40 hours (full time) during academic breaks. Work schedule is subject to change from part-time to full-time as workload dictates.
The entire period served under the Intern Program counts as a trial period.
Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-06/24/2020-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: You must meet the following basic qualification requirements.
Four years of appropriate experience in anthropology performing research, museum work, or similar professional-level work. -OR-
Successfully completed a bachelor's degree in the appropriate field of anthropology from an accredited university or college. NOTE: If you are qualifying based on education, you MUST submit a copy of your transcripts. -OR-
Have an equivalent COMBINATION of experience and education which includes courses equivalent to a major, or combination of courses totaling at least 24 semester hours in the field of anthropology, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
GS-5: To qualify for this position at the GS-5 grade level, you must possess the above basic qualifications.
GS-7: To qualify for this position at the GS-7 grade level, you must possess the basic qualifications listed above and the following specialized experience or education requirements:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes but not limited to activities such as: conducting ethnographic or interdisciplinary research; working with technical and professional staff, other organizations and the public; evaluating regulatory proposals and analyses; anthropological field studies; and general records management.
-OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full year of graduate study in the appropriate field of anthropology from an accredited college or university. (One year of graduate education is 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours). You must include transcripts.
-OR-
Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take percentage of qualifying experience. Then take the number of months of full time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts.
-OR- Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.) - With a completed bachelor's degree in the appropriate field of anthropology from an accredited university or college and meet the criteria for Superior Academic Achievement as evidenced by one of the three following (Documentation must be provided):
Class standing -- Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.
Grade-point average (G.P.A.)-- Applicants must have a grade-point average of: a.) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or b.) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum. Grade-point averages are to be rounded to one decimal place. (NOTE: G.P.A. excluding pass/fail courses. Applicants usually cannot claim credit based on their overall G.P.A. if more than 10 percent of the total credit was based on pass/fail or similar systems rather than on traditional grading systems. However, if documented that only the freshman-year courses (25 percent or less of their total credit) were credited on a pass/fail or similar system, the overall G.P.A. can be used to claim Superior Academic Achievement. If 10 percent or fewer credits or only freshman-year courses were based on pass/fail or similar systems, such credits can be ignored and the G.P.A. computed on the graded courses. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Documentary research and report writing work is sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time.
Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and occasionally outdoors with moderate risk.
