Duties

Help
  • Conduct multiple archeological research projects to include but are not limited to, field surveys, sub-surface investigations, monitoring projects, site assessments and field inspections.
  • Provide general technical assistance and serve as a subject-matter-expert in the preparation of historic preservation documentation, assessment of effect, compliance documents and permits
  • Assist project director, supervisor or higher-level archeologist (either NPS or BLM) in planning, executing, and reporting the results of multi-year fieldwork operations.
  • Assist in coordinating park cultural resources strategies and programs with other divisions as needed to accomplish project work.

Qualifications

This is a TERM position. Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not to exceed thirteen (13) months, with possible extensions up to a total of four (4) years without further competition.

BASIC REQUIREMENT:

A. EDUCATION:
1.
Bachelor's or higher degree that includes 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: 1) History of archeology; 2) Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; 3) Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; 4) Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques; and 5) Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work;
-AND-
Six (6) semester hours of related course work in: geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying;
-AND-
Archeological field school. (NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education.)

2. Related Curriculum: Bachelor's or higher degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in statement A.1 above (including archeological field school).

B. Combination of Education and Experience. College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in statement A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education. (NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education and your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience.)

EXPERIENCE:Four (4) years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level in which you are applying:

GS-09:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) conducting archeological site inventories and cataloging; (2) preparing archeological survey and excavation reports; (3) maintaining and updating cultural resources databases; (4) preparing documentation in compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act and National Environmental Policy Act; and (5) using Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to record archeological site and features.
OR
Education: Successful completion of at least a Master's or equivalent graduate degree or two (2) full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree from an accredited college or university with major study that is directly related to the position. (NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education).
OR
Combination: Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first divide your semester hours of graduate education beyond one (1) year (18 semester hours) by 18. Then take the number of months of full time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. (Note: Only graduate education in excess of the first year (18 semester hours) is creditable toward meeting the experience requirement when combining experience and education. You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education).

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

Physical Demands: The work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stopping, stretching, reaching or similar activities. Heavy items (e.g., packs up to 50 pounds) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis. Fieldwork may include the use of a kayak or canoe (paddling, carrying, launching and landing of small nonmotorized vessel) to access small BLM islands associated with the Monument. Documentary research and report writing work are sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time.

Working Conditions: The work is performed both in an office setting and in the field. Survey and excavation work is typically performed in isolated areas; the incumbent must therefore be familiar with outdoor safety and survival skills and must be able to operate a vehicle on rough roads and operate a kayak or canoe in open ocean waters. Sustained periods of camping under primitive conditions may be required. Incumbent may be required to operate a kayak or canoe for fieldwork associated with the BLM lands as well as overnight backcountry camping.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
