Duties

Help

Performs all aspects of trail maintenance and construction as assigned by the trails maintenance work leader, or designee. Examples of work performed include clearing brush and windfalls from the trail corridor, benching and removing roots/rocks from the tread surface, maintaining tread features, as well as assist in construction and maintenance of trail structures such as bridges, turnpikes, retaining walls, steps, and checks. Uses and maintains a variety of hand tools and power tools such as shovels, picks, pulaskis, chainsaws, string trimmers, and drills to accomplish trail maintenance and construction tasks. Routinely hikes up to 15 miles a day performing trail maintenance tasks carrying loads up to 50 lbs.

Physical Demands: The work performed requires very heavy physical effort. The incumbent routinely lifts, pushes, pulls, and carries items weighing 50 pounds, and up to 150 pounds (or more) with assistance. Grade 3 laborers exert very heavy physical effort in doing such tasks as frequently lifting and moving objects weighing over 50 pounds the exertion of moderate to very heavy physical effort. The work involves lifting and moving objects over 50 pounds, and in some cases, carrying 80 to 100 pounds (or more) with assistance.

Working Conditions: Almost ll of the incumbent's work will be outside in all kinds of weather conditions, and involved the possibility of bruises, muscle strains, cuts and scrapes, and other injuries. Work requires the employee to follow proper safety procedures and use standard safety equipment to avoid serious injuries. At the grade 3 level the tasks involved may result in more serious injuries than at lower grade levels.
