Duties

Help

The incumbent manages the Collections Branch within the Cultural Resources and Museum Management Division at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park (San Francisco, California). The incumbent is responsible for managing the various diverse and complex programs involved in oversight of an extensive museum collection, the day to day supervision of the Historic Documents, Library, and Collections staff and interaction with the Preservation Department staff, to ensure the care, preservation and accountability of the museum objects within the park, and the proper use and maintenance of laboratory apparatus, photographic and museum supplies and equipment. Considerable collaboration with managers throughout the park, within each functional program is expected.

  • Manages an extremely large, varied, and active museum collection program at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park.
  • Plans for and manages projects needed to bring and maintain collection storage facilities to museum standards including structural work, environmental controls, safety, fire and seismic protections, and adequate shelving and cabinet storage.
  • Develops and implements long range plans for the inventory, evaluation, documentation, preservation, research, and interpretation of the museum collection within the park's mission, objectives, and resources contexts.
  • Supervises a diverse staff of curators, archivists, registrar, museum technicians, librarians, and other support staff. Provides direct professional and programmatic advice and support to museum and other staff in Bay Area Network parks, Pacific West Region parks and the Pacific West Regional office.
  • Develops strategic plans, work plans and schedules, project statements, scopes of work, cost estimates and proposals to justify funding requests for and accomplish goals related to the management of the collections. Manages a complex budget incorporating both operational and project funds.
  • Collaborates with managers among all park programs and divisions to help set short and long term park priorities.

  • You will be required to occasionally wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to occasionally travel overnight away from home up to 5 nights per trip. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

To qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level, you must possess at least one of the Basic Requirements and the minimum qualification in the Additional Requirement listed below by close of the announcement:

BASIC REQUIREMENT -

Museum Curator (GS-1015-12):

Degree: In museum work; or in an applicable-matter field (Museum Studies, Art History, Museum Management, Art, Curatorial Studies, Design for Exhibition or Museums, Conservation Studies, Arts Management, etc.)
OR
Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience museum work, or in a directly related field of work that involved the collection, registration, research, conservation and exhibiting of museum collections or additional education.
OR
Four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study as shown in A above.

OR

Archivist (GS-1420-12):

Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one of any combination or the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.
OR
Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience in additional education.

Evaluation of Experience:
Professional experience must have been in archival science, or in a directly related field of work such as history that involved the collection, appraisal, analysis, or synthesis of information having historical or archival values. The following are illustrative of kinds of experience that may be accepted as meeting the professional experience requirements: (1) experience as an archivist in Federal, state, religious institution, business, or other archives, or in manuscript depositories, and (2) experience of an archival nature that involved research in archival science, or in a directly related field such as history, government, economics, political science, international relations, or international law.

AND

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT - In addition to one of the Basic Requirements, to qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualification by the closing date of the announcement:

Specialized Experience: At Least One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Examples of experience may include the following: managing extensive museum collections and carrying out curatorial responsibilities in four museum functions: collection preservation, exhibits, research, and education. Experience may include collections management (in the areas of archeology, history, and archives), registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, and conservation of collections of museum material. Leads or contributes to the development, production and/or installation of thematic exhibits and other interpretive media; conducts research for publication of information, developing interpretive labels, or cataloguing of collections.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Physical Demands: Work at SAFR involves moving the collections with attendant lifting, bending, stooping, reaching and climbing. Handling and treatment of artifacts requires good manual dexterity and the ability to perform delicate and complex tasks.

Working Conditions: Most duties performed at SAFR, in a museum setting, or in warehouse, basements, attics, both indoors and out in all kinds of weather, either at the duty station or in the field. Travel is throughout the NPS. A driver's license is necessary.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for occasional telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
