Duties

Help

The primary purpose of this position is to construct and maintain both backcountry and front country trails within Colorado National Monument and to assist journeyman level tradesmen in all areas of maintenance-type work. Works under a trails maintenance leader or other higher graded position. The position is primarily engaged in assisting in the maintenance and construction of graded and paved trails, trail drainage, trail bridges, and other maintenance work such as building and utilities type of work. May perform duties such as: routine painting, carpentry, trash pickup, cleaning, grounds keeping, digging, raking, or sweeping. May assist in transporting camp and work supplies and construction materials. The job includes heavy lifting and shoveling in many types of weather conditions including hot, cold, wet, and dry conditions.

  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males born after December 31, 1959.
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • Applicants must be at least (1) 18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

  1. Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Worker (Trails) without more than normal supervision. (SCREEN OUT)
  2. Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, Etc (included with other elements)
  3. Technical Practices
  4. Use of Measuring Instruments (included with other elements)
  5. Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc.
  6. Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment.
  7. Knowledge of Materials.

Physical Demands: Heavy physical exertion is frequently required in bending, lifting and using hand and power tools in trail work. Frequently lifts and carries objects weighing up to 100 pounds, carrying and rolling rocks and logs, moving rocks of several tons with rock bars, using hammers to crush or shape rock and using shovels extensively. Frequently walks up to 20 miles daily; and must not have potential emergency medical problems that could complicate work in remote areas for extended periods of time.

Working Conditions: Incumbent must have the ability to live and work effectively in the backcountry areas in close contact with small numbers of people for extended periods of time. Incumbent must live and work out-of-doors on projects in various terrain up to 14,000 feet elevation in all extremes of adverse weather conditions. Trail work is dusty, and hazardous conditions may exist when moving rocks and logs, working in and around rockslide areas, working around stock, working around explosives, falling and bucking trees, and working around machinery.

Colorado National Monument preserves one of the grandest landscapes of American West. The historic Rim Rock Drive offers 23 miles of breathtaking panoramic views and 19 overlooks. Over 43 miles of trails lead across mesa tops and to spectacular overlooks or back country canyons. The monument has a visitation of over 700,000 visitors and provides many recreational uses such as bicycling along Rim Rock Drive, camping in the 80-site campground, hiking, rock climbing, and picnicking. The monument is located 7 miles from Fruita and 17 miles from Grand Junction, Colorado. The surrounding area has a population of approximately 140,000. Most community facilities are located in Grand Junction, including Colorado Mesa University, several hospitals, shopping facilities and churches. The climate is typically dry high desert, with summer highs from 85 to 100 degrees and winter lows occasionally dropping below zero.
