Summary

TERM positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not to exceed ten months.

The work schedule for this position is mixed tour. The incumbent will be guaranteed 17 pay periods in a full-time status (roughly 8 1/2 months), and is expected to be placed in a part time status (16 hours per pay period) for the remainder of the year. This may vary.

Duties

Help

Incumbent provides logistical and in-shop support for special project field crews and skilled assistance in carpentry, painting, masonry, or electrical maintenance. Carpentry work includes both historic and non-historic work on frame and log structures; interior and exterior walls; repairs or construction of shelving and cabinets, historic doors, windows, shutters, molding and casings; and log or pole log replacements. Individual prepares a variety of surfaces for painting. Incumbent applies paints, stains, and preservatives according to established procedures. Individual will assist carpenters pouring and finishing concrete footings, walls, and flat work, and will assist electricians wiring both commercial and residential buildings. Incumbent lays, repairs, and provides skilled assistance on stone and masonry footings, piers, patios, and walls. Prepares materials, packages, and moves supplies for shipment to project sites by helicopter or pack strings. Incumbent serves as a project helicopter manager for special project operations. Individual will complete daily work reports.

  • Uniform: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Work Schedule: You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • Work Schedule: This position has a mixed work schedule based on the varying workload, and your work schedule is subject to change from part-time to full-time to on-call as workload dictates.
  • Trial Period: You will be required to complete a one-year trial period.
  • Travel: You may be required to travel overnight away from home for this position. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Minimum Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

To be found minimally qualified, your resume must support the following: I have experience which demonstrates my ability to perform semi-skilled maintenance work such as carpentry (rough and finish carpentry; framing walls, laying sub-flooring, hanging drywall and paneling; repairing and installing siding/windows/doors, installing molding, applying roofing materials, etc.); painting (painting interior and exterior; repairing, patching areas, preparing surfaces, i.e., wire brushing, scraping, sanding, stripping, masking; applying paints, stains, varnishes, oils, preservatives, primers, sealers, etc.); electrical (setting boxes, switches and fixtures; preparing routes for wiring circuits; pulling circuit wires and bending conduit; and removing, replacing and adjusting controls); masonry (forming foundation footings and walls) on buildings and structures. In preparing your application, describe in detail the experience and training which you have had that specifically prepared you for this job and to perform the duties described for this job. There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Additional Selections: This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate, and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions.

Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks, and biting insects. If the incumbent of this position operates a motor vehicle (s) they must have a valid State Driver's License.
