Duties

Help

As a Biological Science Technician, you will be responsible for:

  • You will act as the assistant data manager for the Northeast Coastal and Barrier Network, which entails managing long-term ecological datasets, providing quality assurance checks and making data discoverable through the NPS Data Portal.
  • You will support the Northeast Coastal and Barrier Inventory and Monitoring Network by assisting in the collection of long-term monitoring data such as salt marsh vegetation, shoreline and dune change, elevations, and coastal water quality and water levels during the summer months. You will also be in charge of data collection for the program with the use of survey grade GNSS (GPS) equipment.
  • You will train seasonal biological science technicians and interns to collect long-term monitoring data in coastal parks as part of the Northeast Coastal and Barrier Network monitoring program.
  • You will assist the data manager with the design and development of databases to manage natural resource data for Northeast Coastal and Barrier Network projects, as well as, develop GIS products as needed for the monitoring program and parks.
  • You will use ArcGIS software to create maps, digital elevation models (DEMs), and other mapping products.

  • Travel: You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 4 nights per month, and will travel more than 4 nights per month during the summer . You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-08 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: assisting in the design, development, and management of database systems for the long-term maintenance, analysis and dissemination of natural resource-related data sets produced by past and forthcoming inventory and monitoring effects; synthesizing a wide range of data types including biological, physical, and bibliographical in both tabular and spatial formats; and/or integrating a variety of GIS and database management software, and modifying and adapting standard software; providing technical assistance and direct professional advice and support to others. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two full years of graduate education or a master's degree that is in a field of study that is directly related to the work of the position. Directly related graduate study may include Biology, Ecology, Geology, Natural Resource Science, or related field of science underlying biological research. You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To compute, first, determine your experience as a percentage of the experience required in A; then determine your graduate education as a percentage of the education required in B. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Physical Demands: The work requires regular physical exertion such as walking or climbing over wet, rough, uneven and/or rocky surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping or reaching to observe, collect and/or record field data; or in some situations the work may require physical exertion to handle wild animals, prepare soil for planting, to scuba dive or operate a boat. Moderately heavy items, such as equipment packs weighing up to 50 pounds, must be lifted and carried on a regular basis. May be required to hike several miles in a day. In other situations, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as exceptional hand/eye coordination.

Working Conditions: The work environment varies from office/laboratory settings to field sites. The work performed in the field involves regular and recurring exposure to extreme weather conditions and terrain, poisonous plants, biting insects and wild animals. The employee is required to use protective clothing such as gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves.

Telework: The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval. Telework will be on a situational basis.
