    Summary

    Under the direction of the Secretary of Defense and the Undersecretary of Defense for Policy (USD(P)), and pursuant to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2015, the Defense Prisoner of War/Missing Personnel Office, the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command, and the Life Sciences Equipment Laboratory were combined in January, 2015, into a single defense agency -- the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA).

    Responsibilities

    Your typical work assignments may include the following:

    • The incumbent for this position will set, convey, and enforce standards and procedures for research and case development. Will coordinate the tasking and monitoring of the work of other researchers to ensure all casework conforms to Agency requirements, shepherding all cases through the entire development process, and serving as the subject matter expert and point of contact for area of research. The incumbent must utilize appropriate project management techniques to plan, coordinate, develop, and execute major historical research projects that involve multiple individuals.
    • Incumbent will be the historical advisor and professional consultant for DPAA conducting historical studies; obtaining, collecting, analyzing, exploiting, and integrating all available historical evidence and information; interpreting military history in the context of U.S. military and civilian personnel; establishing historical facts based upon research conducted; and grouping historical facts along with determining interrelationships to search, recover, and identify unaccounted-for persons from past conflicts.
    • Incumbent will research historical records and investigative leads to identify information requirements and gaps to satisfy during field investigations and disinterments. The incumbent will compile data from Agency repositories, foreign and domestic archives, electronic sources, oral histories, field investigations, and other sources to conduct analysis and build case narrative information for missing individuals and unidentified remains from past conflicts in accordance with Agency guidelines.
    • Incumbent acts as the lead in developing historical information and regional strategies to directly support casualty investigations and search and recovery missions.
    • Incumbent possesses an understanding of the geography and flow of battle, casualty evacuation processes, remains recovery activities, and remains handling and processing procedures.
