Summary

This position is located in Gateway National Recreation Area, Sandy Hook Maintenance Operation, in the Facility Management Division. The primary responsibility of this position is the operation and maintenance of water and wastewater systems throughout the park. Work includes performing preventive maintenance to meet State and NPS compliance with regulatory statutes.

Duties

Help
  • Operate and maintain water treatment facilities, water distribution systems, and wastewater collection systems throughout the park to ensure that all systems meet trade standards and code requirements established by the state and federal government.
  • Apply the best health, sanitary, and mechanical principles and practices to ensure proper operation and maintenance of microbiological and physical-chemical processes for efficient treatment of potable water distribution systems throughout the park.
  • Responsible for the complete repair and replacement of water system related components such as water meters, pumps, chlorinators, pressure tanks, and filters.
  • Perform plumbing related duties which will include planning, layout, and routing of piping systems within chemical and industrial settings, using sketches, blueprints or other technical data and in accordance with current trade standards and codes.

  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You must have valid state driver?s license and the ability to obtain a Class B commercial driver?s license with tanker endorsement within one year.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record.
  • You must possess and maintain a current New Jersey S-2 Wastewater Treatment Operators Certificate, and you must be able to secure and maintain a valid New Jersey S-3 Wastewater Treatment Operators Certificate within 2 years.
  • You must be able to secure and maintain a NJDEP C-1, T-1, W-1 within 2 years.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

  2. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) (JE#-25-E);
  3. Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. (JE#-2E);
  4. Knowledge of Materials (JE#-82A);
  5. Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading) (JE#-75-A);
  6. Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment (JE#-81);
  7. Use of Measuring Instruments (JE# 60).

For this position, work is defined as planning and laying out work from blueprints, schematic graphics and technical manuals; working on large projects which often involve more complex problems and extensive repairs; making independent judgments and decisions based on accepted preventative and maintenance measures of utility systems; determining the nature and extent of repairs required on utility systems and equipment, and performing the repairs as an expert with a high degree of independence.

Physical Demands: The incumbent makes installation from ladders, scaffolds and platforms where parts of the systems are in cramped places. This requires standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and cramped positions. Frequently lifts and carries up to 50 pounds and occasionally over 40 pounds.

Working Conditions: The Utility Systems Operator is expected to work outside in all types of weather with temperatures varying from -20 to 90+ degrees; often works inside in dusty, dirty and occasionally greasy locations where there is a possibility of cuts and bruises.
