These are Full-Time temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours (about 6 months) in a service year. Positions may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Yosemite National Park is mid-May to mid-November, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding.

Anticipated Entry on Duty: Mid-May 2018

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

Duties

Help

This position is located in the Division of Resources Management and Science, Vegetation and Ecological Restoration in Yosemite National Park. The incumbent performs a variety of work that involves the operation of gasoline and diesel powered heavy equipment. This includes the use of a ten yard dump truck, road grader and end loader. The incumbent operates heavy equipment to support vegetation and ecological restoration projects. Performs preventive maintenance, makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and attachments.

  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You must possess and maintain a current Class B Commercial Driver's License with Air Brake and Tanker Endorsements.
  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

  1. Ability To Do the Work of an Engineering Equipment Operator without More than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT)

In addition to the qualification requirements listed, the following Selective Placement Factor applies and must be met:
  • Possess and maintain Class B CDL with Tank Vehicle endorsement.

This position provides for rehire eligibility on the conditions that the selectee(s) serve at least 31 consecutive calendar days and receive a fully successful (or better) final performance evaluation. Rehire eligibility is limited to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment in this park with the same duties and grade. Rehire eligibility is neither a right nor guarantee of a job offer. Consideration of rehire eligible candidates is one of several options available to selecting officials when filling temporary positions.

Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is required in constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to handle different sets of controls to operate the equipment and attachments. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds and often puts forth similar effort when pushing, pulling, turning and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment and tools.

Working Conditions: Works both inside and outside with the majority of work being performed outside. When working outside, worker is frequently exposed to inclement weather. Incumbent works in rain, mud, snow, and in hot or cold temperatures. The operator is frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, fumes, oils, solvents and cold and dampness. Worker is frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, abrasions, bruises and strains while servicing and operating equipment. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as protective hearing devices and hard hats.

Seasonal Housing: Available housing units may include tent cabins, mobile homes, apartments, or traditional houses and housing/rooms will likely be shared with other employees, interns, volunteers, etc. Units may be rustic, located in wilderness areas, with few if any modern conveniences. Pets (other than service pets) and overnight guests are not allowed; units are to house assigned employees only.
