These positions are Multiple Schedules temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours (about 6 months) in a service year. Positions may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement may be eligible for rehire in subsequent service years provided the employee does not exceed 1039 hours of work in their service year.
The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Fire Island National Seashore is May-September, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: May 2018

The incumbent will perform the full range of lifeguard/rescue swimmer duties including but not limited to; maintaining a watch over swimmers in the water at designated NPS swimming areas on Fire Island, render direct assistance to swimmers in trouble, perform first aid to visitors commensurate with their level of training, assist park rangers with crowd control at a rescue scene, respond to neighboring communities to render assistance to the lifeguard staff there or directly assist and perform rescue functions as needed. The incumbent is expected to work outside during the summer months in direct sunlight and is expected to perform rescue duties in the Atlantic Ocean in a variety of surf conditions. The incumbent is expected to pass a physical, urine test as well as a swim and run test. Incumbent is expected to participate in the beach crew workout schedule to maintain his/her physical conditioning and lifeguard skills. The incumbent is also required to maintain beach count records during their shift as well as submit case incident reports documenting rescues and other related incidents.
AREA INFORMATION: Fire Island National Seashore is located 5-7 miles south of Long Island New York. It is comprised of about 19,000 acres along 26 miles of ocean and bay shoreline including islands within the Great South Bay. The park has concurrent jurisdiction including 1000 feet into the Atlantic Ocean and out to 1.6 nautical miles into the Great South Bay. The Fire Island National Seashore has 17 communities within it's boundary along with 2 NPS marinas and campgrounds operated by a concessioner. Transportation in summer between the Island and the mainland is by public ferry or private boat. Because it is accessible only by water in summer, it could be considered a remote duty station. Of note, Fire Island contains the only federally designated wilderness area in New York State that can be reached via mass transit from Patchogue New York. The salary is augmented by the area salary differential. All the amenities one would expect to find in a suburban area are available on the mainland including access to medical facilities, shopping and an abundance of recreational activities and opportunities including access to some of the world's best beaches, surfing, fishing, boating, hiking and other related water activities. The park is approximately 55 miles east of New York City. ?U.S. Government housing is available.

Physical Demands: Incumbent must be able to swim long distances in open surf. He/she is expected to run in sand and maintain endurance to cope with saving a human life, which may occur in strong ocean currents. Rigorous workouts are part of the lifeguards morning routine.
Working Conditions: The environment is a beach area. Temperatures can range from the high 40's to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Surf temperatures can be as low as 48 degrees Fahrenheit and seldom get above 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Incumbent is expected to sit through mild rainstorms and times with wind-blown sand.
