These positions are located In the Facility Management Division, Water Utility Section, of the Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona. The Water Utility Section is comprised of multiple facilities which are located at the South Rim, Desert View, North Rim, Roaring Springs, Phantom Ranch, and Indian Gardens developed areas of the Park.

Duties

Help

  • Operate and maintain filtration equipment, pumps, valves, meters, monitors and chemical feed equipment in potable water production facility.
  • Operate, maintain and rehabilitate water treatment facilities with daily capacity in excess of 1.0 million gallons per day and/or wastewater treatment facilities with daily capacity of 750,000 gallons per day.
  • Operate and maintain sanitary sewage lift stations, facultative lagoons, aeration equipment, valves, meters, monitors and transfer pumps in wastewater treatment plant.
  • Troubleshoot and repair pumps, valves, meters, monitors and chemical feed equipment in Utility section facilities.
  • Conduct regularly scheduled Inspection check of the potable water systems including gauges, meters, electrical motors, pumps, automated valving, chemical feeders, recording and control devices, in-line monitors, chlorination systems, booster pump stations and water storage tanks.
  • Practice safe work techniques, use personal protective equipment as needed and practice good housekeeping so as to contribute to a safe working environment.

  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • Occupancy of government quarters is required.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You will be required to complete a one-year trial period.
  • You must possess and maintain an Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) Operator Certification in at least one of four disciplines regulated by ADEQ or equivalent certification from another state/jurisdiction with reciprocity from ADEQ. You must be able to test for and acquire additional certification levels and disciplines appropriate for the system(s) and location(s) where you are assigned.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

To qualify for this position you must meet both the Qualification requirement and the Selective Placement Factor as indicated below:

Applicants must be physically fit and, as required in Office of Personnel Management Qualifications Handbook X-118C, must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the elements listed in Section 25 of the Online Occupational Questionnaire to perform the duties of the position at the level for which they are applying. A specific length of time and experience is not required. Qualification requirement emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. You must meet the 2 point level on the screen out factor/element and an average of level 2 on all factors/elements listed. Applicant must demonstrate the ability to do the work of a Utility Systems Repairer Operator WG-4742-09 without more than normal supervision.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Applicants must CURRENTLY possess and maintain in an active status an Arizona Department of Environmental Qualify (ADEQ) Certification or equivalent, in one of the four disciplines (e.g., field of water, wastewater treatment, water distribution, or wastewater collection). You must submit a legible copy of your ADEQ Certification or equivalent with your application. If you provide a legible copy of your certification/licensure which depicts a photo, your application will be screen out and deemed not eligible for consideration. DO NOT SUBMIT DOCUMENTS WITH PHOTOs. If the documentation is not submitted with your application you will be deemed as not meeting the selective placement factor and you will be removed from further consideration.

Physical Demands: The physical effort may be from light to heavy. The operator may frequently lift up to 50 pounds and at times will lift or move materials heavier than 100 pounds with the help of other personnel or with the use of materials handling equipment. Work can be both inside and outside with personnel exposed to weather elements Including heat, cold, rain, and snow. Work may be performed both during the day and at night.

Working Conditions: Work will be both Inside of facilities and buildings and outside In temperatures that can range from 100 degrees F. during the summer to -10 degrees F. in the winter. Exposure to rain, sleet, and snow can occur.
The operator must work around hazardous chemicals, gases, liquids, and reagents and must have a solid working knowledge of safety practices and procedures when working with these chemicals. The operator will be exposed to confined spaces, biological hazards, hearing hazards, electrical hazards, moving machinery, trenching hazards, and other potentially dangerous conditions and must at all times adhere to all safety practices and procedures when exposed to these hazards.

ICTAP/CTAP Clearance: Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection.
