The Pacific West Region is recruiting for TEMPORARY seasonal positions not to exceed 6 months (1,039 hours) work in a service year. Dates of employment will vary between park sites depending on funding, weather conditions and visitation. Within regulatory limitations, the length of initial appointment may be shortened or extended depending on work availability and funding. For information about work season, government housing availability, and rate of pay, please review the "Duties" below.
Incumbent assists the Cultural Resources Program Manager & Supervisor execute duties related to Historic Preservation actions, Section 110 & 106 reporting requirements for the National Register of Historic Places, as well as provide assistance in monitoring and execution of Facilities Maintenance and Deferred Maintenance projects, public dissemination of information related to historic preservation, cultural resources within Whiskeytown National Recreation Area (WHIS), documentation, and data management.
Performs basic archeological field work necessary to assess potential impacts to cultural resources resulting from proposed undertakings within Whiskeytown NRA.
Performs archeological inventory, site documentation and condition assessments, preparation of survey records and publication-ready reports.
Conducts excavation and testing of archeological sites, including the careful recovery of sample materials.
Communicates with, and assists project leads to support compliance, monitoring and consultation requirements
Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
Required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
This position requires wilderness travel and camping skills. You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 2 nights per month.
Qualifications
BASIC REQUIREMENT:
To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following basic requirements for the 0193 occupational series by the closing date of the announcement:
A. Successful completion of a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited college or university that included: 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: History of archeology; Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; Theory and methods of archeology (methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques); Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work;
AND six semester hours of related course work in: geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); or surveying;
AND Archeological Field School;
OR Related Curriculum: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements stated above (including archeological field school);
OR
B. Successful completion of a bachelor's or higher degree in related curriculum: degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements above (including archeological field school);
OR
C. Combination of education and experience. Creditable education is college-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education;
OR
D. Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, you must meet one of the following requirements to meet the minimum qualifications for this position at the GS-07 grade level by the closing date of the announcement:
A. One (1) year of full-time specialized experience equivalent to the next lower level (GS-05), obtained in either the public or private sectors. . Examples of specialized experience include: having conducted archeological investigations as an experienced crew member or crew chief; prepared reports on archeological investigations; conducted surveys using GPS mapping techniques and preparing GIS maps and overlays; and having experience conducting historical archeological field investigations and report preparation;
OR
B. Successful completion of one full year (18 semester credits or 27 quarter credits) of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree in archeology, anthropology, or other closely related field;
OR
C. Combination of Experience and Education - To calculate your percentage of qualifying graduate education, divide your number of semester hours in excess of 18 semester hours by 18 or the number your school uses to represent one year of full time graduate academic study. To calculate your percentage of experience, divide your months of qualifying specialized experience by 12. Add the two percentages. They must equal 100% to qualify using this option.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies". No additional credit is given for overtime. Temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours in a service year may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for the possibility of extensions or rehire in subsequent service years.
Physical Demands: The work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities; and recurring lifting of moderately heavy items (up to 45 pounds).
Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and occasionally outdoors with moderate risks.

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 or 1730 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).
