Summary

These are temporary not-to-exceed 1039 hours in a service year positions located at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in the Maintenance Division. This position requires that the incumbent possess a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsement to operate commercial-type vehicles.

Duties

Help

The purpose of this position is to operate one or more motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of over 26,000 pounds and operate gas and diesel powered heavy equipment. The incumbent will be responsible for the full range of engineering and equipment operator duties which include the following:

Perform a variety of work that involves the operation of gasoline and diesel powered heavy equipment. This includes the use of five yard dump trucks, ten yard dump trucks, truck-tractor with trailer, culvert flusher trucks, wheel loaders, back hoes and graders.
Operate end loader in the process of moving dirt and materials and filling trucks.
Operate five-yard dump trucks t remove snow from roads and parking lots.
Use of skid steer style tractors with a variety of attachments to build trails, boardwalks and in the rehabilitation of wetlands.
Use the grader, loader and dump truck to remove snow from roads and parking lots.
Use equipment for collection and disposal of solid waste and recyclable materials. Use equipment for road side brushing, and rock scaling operations.Perform safety checks and preventative maintenance; make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and attachments. Replace chains, belts, cables, etc.

Physical Requirements: Heavy physical effort is required in constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feed and legs to handle different sets of controls to operate the equipment and attachments of this position. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. You may frequently lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds and often similar effort when pushing, pulling, turning and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment and tools.

Working Conditions: Works both inside and outside with the majority of work being performed outside. You will be frequently exposed to inclement weather including rain, mud, snow, and in hot/cold temperatures. The operator is frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, fumes, oils, solvents, and cold or dampness. Worker is frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, abrasions, bruises and strains while servicing and operating equipment.

  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
  • You must possess and maintain a current Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brake endorsement.
  • Prior to operation of government vehicles, you will be required to provide a copy of your commercial driver's license and to provide a copy of your state driving record from all states in which you have possessed a CDL, at your expense.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime.

Qualifications

Selective Factor (Screen out): You must have a current Class A Commercial Drivers License with air brake Endorsement. Provide a copy of your CDL in your application package.

The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is April through September but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding.

These Temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours in a service year may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs.

Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for the possibility of extensions or rehire in subsequent service years.

Travel, transportation and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.
