Duties

Help

Use of commercial/industrial janitorial materials, tools, and equipment to clean carpeting, walls, window sills, floors, and all surface areas to include exhibit and artifact coverings, security surfaces/barriers, in the museum, galleries, and exhibit rooms. Clean floors (maple, oak, pine, carpet, limestone, tile, stone, and marble), walls, fixtures, windows, blinds, chandeliers, and furniture (mahogany, oak, and cherry wood). Using prescribed methods (Tung oil treated dust mops for wood floors and Watco--tung oil for furniture, banisters, and doors), equipment, and materials. Disposes of waste materials and maintains containers in clean, sanitary condition. Use heavy duty powered equipment, such as floor scrubbers, vacuum cleaners, floor buffers, burnishes, hydraulic lifts, scaffolding, and high pressure hot water cleaners for carpets (Steamex). Make minor adjustments to such equipment while in use to ensure proper operation. Pick up litter on lawns, steps and sidewalks. Wash and disinfect picnic tables. Provide assistance during special events and activities when required. Remove snow from steps, porticos, and sidewalks. Assist with moving bulk packaging and specific mail transporting. Clean ceiling and port-a-potty at the observation deck. Independently keeps restrooms clean, orderly, and in sanitary condition at the Gateway Arch complex. Clean restroom fixtures consisting of toilet bowls, urinals, lavatories and service sinks with operating valves, faucets, drains, and exposed pipes; electric hand dryers; dispensers for soap, towels, toilet tissue, and sanitary napkins, refuse receptacles; and toilet partitions including their doors. Clean furnishings such as tables, desks, chairs, sofas, benches, and book and exhibit cases. Clean glass and plastic, walk off mats, runners and throw rugs. Empty and clean waste containers. Clean load zones and tram capsules.

Physical Demands: Work requires considerable expenditure of physical energy plus ability to lift and move heavy objects frequently weighing 40 pounds, and occasionally objects weighing over 50 pounds. Occasionally such loads must be carried up five flights of stairs. Must be able to carry and set-up ladders and scaffolding for high work which will include cleaning and changing light bulbs, washing walls, and cleaning difficult to reach painted surfaces. Transportation to the 3 separated facilities is most often by means of walking, during varying climates.

Working Conditions: The Old Courthouse is not centrally air-conditioned and the Arch's central air conditioner is turned on from 7:00 am to closing daily, and working in these buildings can be uncomfortably hot in summer and cold in the winter. During snow removal operations the air may be cold and surfaces slippery. Much of the work is performed on concrete, terrazzo floors, and employee is constantly on his/her feet, and traversing up to five flights of stairs.

  • You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
