Summary

These positions are located in Wolf Trap National Park, Vienna, Va., in the Division of Maintenance.

The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is May, 2020 through September, 2020, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April, 2020.

You will perform work involved in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings and related trades such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical & painting.

Duties

Help

  • Operates light trucks to pick up and transport supplies and materials.
  • Operates a forklift to load and unload supplies.
  • Performs carpentry repairs such as replacing broken planks on picnic tables; broken windows using pre-cut stock; adjustments or replacements of hinges, latches, and catches..
  • Performs painting using brushes and rollers according to specific instructions on projects, such as staining picnic tables, and painting trash barrels.
  • Performs plumbing repairs such as tightening or replacing fittings and fixtures, replaces faucet washers; unplugs drains using a plunger; replaces liquid petroleum gas bottles.
  • Performs maintenance on campground sites, trails, exterior structures, buildings, equipment, and related utilities.
  • Collects trash, cleans and services campground facilities.
  • Uses simple hand tools and power tools safely such as hammers, shovels, saws, picks, wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers, brushes and rollers, electric drills/saws, and other power tools.
  • Operate light equipment not requiring special rigging.

  • You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license.
  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

  1. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT).
  2. Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, installation, repair, etc.,
  3. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
  4. Use of Measuring Instruments.
  5. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blue printing reading).
  6. Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment.
  7. Knowledge of Materials

Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for the possibility of extensions or rehire in subsequent service years.

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

Physical Demands: Works from ladders, scaffolds and platforms and where surfaces to be coated, or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach that require incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lift, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weight up to 40 pounds.

Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside where dirt, spray, and fumes are present. Also required to work in inclement weather and/or wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.
