Summary

You will serve as a FUL - Laborer (Motor Vehicle Operating) (Temporary) with Joshua Tree National Park. Performing laboring duties that require moderately heavy physical effort requiring the use of common hand tools and power equipment.

This is a temporary position expected to last 1 year but may be extended up to a maximum of two years based on agency needs and potential funding.

Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following:

  • Operates pick up trucks and other offroad vehicles to conduct maintenance on paved and unpaved roadways.
  • Operates ride on power equipment to assist in the removal of roadside brush, dirt, debris.
  • Uses paint striping equipment to paint pavement markings, parking lot striping, and painting of metal gates.
  • Uses hand tools such as hedgers, loppers, string trimmers, and small saws to conduct roadside brushing of vegetation.
  • Perform various duties and operates light duty motor vehicles weighing up to 10,000 pounds such as pick up trucks, panel trucks, flatbed truck, four-wheel and two-wheel drive etc.

  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • You are required to wear a uniform and comply with the uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You are required to complete training, obtain and maintain a government credit card with travel and purchase authority.
  • You must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
  • You must be at least 18 years of age or older to operate government vehicles.

This position will be filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority. Eligibility is limited to applicants who reside within the defined local commuting area at the time of application. For this announcement, the local commuting area is the area from which individuals can reasonably commute to the duty station under normal conditions. This area reflects the geographic region from which individuals can reasonably be expected to travel daily to and from work under normal conditions, such as 50 miles/60 minutes in a metropolitan area or75 miles/90 minutes in rural or remote areas. The defined vicinity for this position is: San Bernardino, CA; Riverside, CA, counties. You must provide proof of residency within the defined vicinity (e.g. mortgage or property deed, lease/rental agreement, utility bill, insurance policy, etc.). Physical Demands: The work performed requires the exertion of moderate to very heavy physical effort. The work involves lifting and moving objects over 50 pounds, and in some cases, carrying 80 to 100 pounds (or more) with assistance.

Working Conditions: Outside work is usually performed under all kinds of weather conditions. Indoor work is often accomplished in office buildings or in well-lighted, heated, and ventilated areas such as warehouses, loading docks, or trade shops. Frequently exposed to weather and temperature extremes, drafts, noise, dust, and dirt and the possibility of bruises, muscle strains, cuts and scrapes. Work requires the employee to follow proper safety procedures and use standard safety equipment such as gloves, ear protectors, safety glasses, and steel-toe shoes to avoid possible hazards in the work area.
