Summary

You will serve as a FUL-Maintenance Worker Supervisor (Roads and Trails) in the Facilities Management Division within the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.

Supervises the operation, maintenance, repair and construction of more than 140 miles of roads and trails and associated assets, including culverts, storm drains and channels, parking lots, fencing, gates, bridges and other assets.

Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following:

  • Plan and schedule short- and long-term maintenance, repair, and construction activities for roads, trails, drainage features, and associated assets across the park.
  • Supervise and direct crew operations by assigning work, providing technical guidance, monitoring field progress, and ensuring safe and efficient project execution.
  • Ensure environmental and historic-preservation compliance for roads and trails projects by preparing required documentation and coordinating necessary approvals.
  • Manage administrative functions including budgeting inputs, procurement actions, contract support, performance management, and required reporting.
  • Apply technical knowledge of roads and trails construction, maintenance methods, materials, and equipment to inspect, direct, and verify quality and code-compliant field work.

As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.

Physical Demands:
This position requires the incumbent to maintain a high level of physical fitness. Work includes year-round inspections, maintenance, and repair of roads and trails throughout the Santa Monica Mountains, often in steep, uneven, or remote terrain. Emergency response may require extended hours and rapid mobilization. Moderate to heavy physical effort is needed when operating equipment or handling natural materials. The incumbent frequently reaches, bends, turns, and uses hands, arms, feet, and legs while lifting, carrying, and maneuvering tools, equipment, and debris.

Working Conditions:
Daily duties occur both indoors and outdoors, with a substantial portion performed in field environments across the mountain range. Work must be carried out effectively during a wide range of environmental conditions including intense heat, seasonal winds, cold or wet weather, and post-storm trail and road hazards. The incumbent will encounter dust, dirt, mud, vegetation, poison oak, biting insects, and wildlife. Tasks may occur near moving vehicles and heavy equipment, and require adherence to all safety standards while working in rugged, exposed areas.
