Minor maintenance and repair of building and utility systems including simple carpentry, plumbing, painting, utility system operation and repair, trash and recycling pickup and disposal or staging, grounds work or custodial duties involving the daily cleaning and upkeep of visitor use facilities such as campgrounds, rest stops, visitor centers or other maintenance and custodial duties as assigned.

  • Use a variety of hand and power tools such as shovels, brooms, picks, hammers, wrenches, tape measures, hand saws, levels, power drills, power saws, power nail guns & stationary shop equipment such as table saws, drill press, and sanders.
  • Use a variety of custodial chemical cleaning products, general purpose cleaners, mild acid toilet bowl cleaners, carpet shampoo, glass cleaner, mops, toilet plungers, vacuums, carpet extraction machines, buffers, power washers, and wastewater pumps.
  • Possess a maintain a valid driver's license. Incumbent may operate a variety of government vehicles, vans, trucks up to 10,000 lbs gross vehicle weight, skidsteer loaders and watercraft.

Area Information:

Situated on the United States-Mexico border, Amistad National Recreation Area is known primarily for excellent year-round water-based recreation including boating, fishing, swimming, scuba diving. and water-skiing. Amistad NRA also provides opportunities for picnicking, camping, and hunting. Amistad Dam created the reservoir, at the confluence of the Rio Grande, Devils and Pecos rivers, in 1969. In addition to excellent recreation, this area is rich in archeology and rock art, and contains a wide variety of plant and animal life. Headquarters is in Del Rio, Texas, population 35,000. Del Rio offers all amenities. The nearest cities of any size are San Angelo (150 miles), Laredo (180 miles), and San Antonio (153 miles). This part of South Texas has sunny, humid, and hot summers and mild winters. July and August are the hottest months with average high temperatures in the mid-90's and overnight lows in the 70's. Coolest months are December and January when average lows are around 40 degrees. GOVERNMENT HOUSING IS NOT AVAILABLE.

As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.

This probationary period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider:

  • your performance and conduct;
  • the needs and interests of the agency;

Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
  1. Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT)
  2. Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.
  3. Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
  4. Use of measuring instruments
  5. Ability to interpret instructions, specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading)
  6. Abiltiy to use and maintain tools and equipment
  7. Knowledge of materials

This position will be filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority. Eligibility is limited to applicants who reside within the defined local commuting area at the time of application. For this announcement, the local commuting area is the area from which individuals can reasonably commute to the duty station under normal conditions. The defined vicinity for this position is: Amistad National Recreation Area 10477 US HWY 90 West, Del Rio, Texas 78840. Pay will vary based on grade level and/or duty location for which you're selected. First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the step 1 rate.

Physical Demands: Works from ladders, scaffolds and platforms and where surfaces to be coated, or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach that require incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds.

Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside where dirt, spray and fumes are present. Also required to work in inclement weather and/or wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.
