Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provides advanced emergency medical care, maintaining EMS equipment, and participating in quality assurance and protocol review to enhance patient outcomes.
  • Manages response readiness by overseeing ambulance and supply inventories, performing regular checks, addressing shortages, and implementing innovations like digital records and GPS data collection to improve efficiency and safety.

Physical Demands: The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as climbing, hiking, and lifting heavy objects. Work may be performed on uneven, steep, rough, slippery, and/or rugged terrain. EMS and search and rescue activities involve walking long distances over rough terrain, carrying heavy loads, and using technical rescue equipment. Going without sleep for long periods of time is a common occurrence. Incumbent must be able to ride in a motorboat or fixed wing aircraft without ill effects. The paramedic role often requires the lifting of patients (in excess of 50 pounds) and heavy equipment (in excess of 70 pounds), and can be within a confined working environment, including making access to a patient. It is also not uncommon for paramedics to defend themselves restraining a patient who is suffering from a medical or psychological emergency.
