Help

Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following:

  • Assists with propagation of fish, plants, and/or other aquatic organisms at the Bears Bluff National Fish Hatchery.
  • Performs daily husbandry duties: feeding, weighing, and measuring fish and aquatic organisms.
  • Cleans, monitors, and performs light maintenance on enclosures and life support systems.
  • Monitors hatchery water quality and/or other environmental parameters, and reports to supervisor when out of desired range.
  • Assists biologists with controlled reproduction of fish and other aquatic organisms in a hatchery setting, collecting and hatching eggs, husbandry of offspring, and delivery at scheduled times.

  • Work Schedule: Shift work may be required. Emergency overtime may be required. The employee may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Emergency Response: Incumbent is required to respond to alarms on the evenings and weekends, as assigned. Alarm must be responded to timely (<15 minutes) to ensure specimens, remain viable.
  • Driver's License: Selectees will be required to possess and maintain a valid State driver's license at all times during their tenure.
As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.

This probationary period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience. Minimum Qualification Requirements: To qualify for this position, you must meet the following minimum qualifications:

Minimum Qualification (GS-05):

  1. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience comparable to the GS-4 level or higher in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience: Specialized experience includes (1) fish hatchery work, fish surveys and/or fishery related studies; (2) assist with the preparation, maintenance, and use of equipment; (3) record information in legible form; (4) assist with collection, stocking, population determination, and species identification; (5) participate in fishery management surveys. NOTE: Your resume must contain sufficient detail of this level of work, i.e., complete begin/end dates, hours worked per week, duties performed, etc. for each timeframe for consideration. OR
  2. Education: Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major field of study (or at least 24 semester hours of study) in biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours must have been directly related to this position. You must include transcripts. OR
  3. Combination of education and experience: A combination of experience and education as described above which, when combined, is equivalent to 100% of the qualification requirement. You must include transcripts.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Transcripts must include your name, school name, grades, credit hours earned, major(s), grade point average or class ranking, and date the degree was conferred, if applicable.
