Physical Demands: Work requires frequent walking, standing, pushing of carts and wheelbarrows, bending, and stooping. Climbs ladders to trim and/or prune trees. Frequently lifts heavy objects such as bags of fertilizer grass seed, etc. May work from an aerial lift. The gardener uses power equipment such as mowers, aerators, hedge trimmers, etc. When motor vehicle or tractor operator duties are performed moderate effort is exerted to manipulate equipment controls.
Working Conditions: Work is done outside or in a greenhouse. In working outside, the gardener is subject to discomfort from long periods in the hot sun, and sometimes to chilly or rainy weather. In some instances the conditions involve working in air contaminated with chemical dust and sprays being used on trees and shrubs. This position is required to wear protective clothing during pesticide/herbicide application; as well as, normal safety items such as gloves, boots, glasses, etc. Because of the duties performed, the incumbent is subject to minor injuries such as cuts, scratches, bruises, and scrapes. There is occasionally the possibility of more serious injury. When vehicles are operated there is additional exposure to risk due to traffic accidents
The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position not are suitable for telework.
Documentation for the Land Management Workforce Flexibility Act (LMWFA) eligibility, submission of ALL SF-50s and performance information for each period of temporary/term employment that qualifies for LMWFA.
