This position is in the Facility Management Division of Flagstaff Area National Monuments and is supervised by the Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Maintenance Worker Leader to lead others in the application of trade skills in trails, roads, rigging, and equipment operations for operations and maintenance purposes. In the absence of the Supervisor, the incumbent may serve as Acting Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor, supervising park employees in daily operations.

  • Lead others in the application of trade skills in trails, roads, rigging and equipment operations, for operations and maintenance purposes.
  • Maintain current knowledge and answer questions of other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives.
  • Ensure necessary safety protocols, plans, materials, supplies, equipment, and tools are available when needed; and recommend operation needs based on work requests to supervisor.
  • Perform fieldwork including mowing, pavement maintenance, masonry, building maintenance, and custodial services.
  • Assist with asset and financial management, payroll, evaluations, and various internal controls.
Additionally, this position performs the following non-supervisory work in at least two or more of the following occupations involved in the maintenance and repair of grounds, trails, exterior structures, buildings and related fixtures, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices; Masonry, Road Maintenance, Snow Plowing, Enfineering Equipment Operation and Trail Maintenance.

This position will be filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority. Eligibility is limited to applicants who reside within the defined local commuting area at the time of application. Physical Demands: Heavy physical exertion is required (bending, lifting, etc.) using hand and power tools in maintenance work. Frequently lifts and carries objects weighing up to 75 pounds. Must be able to lift, carry, or roll rocks and logs, move rocks of with rock bars, use hammers to crush or shape rock, and use shovel extensively. Frequently walks up to 5 miles daily and must be able to do so at a minimum rate of 3 miles per hour, with back-pack and required tools.

Working Conditions: Incumbent must work outside to complete work in all types of weather conditions. The majority of work conditions will be in the 5,000-to-8,000-foot elevation level. Adverse weather includes rain, snow, hail, wind, and dust; temperatures range from below 0 to over 100 degrees F. Incumbent is exposed to dust, noise, vibration, and fumes from vehicle/equipment exhaust. Hazardous conditions exist when working around vehicles and equipment and on slippery roads due to ice, snow, mud, or water. Trail work is dusty, and hazardous conditions may exist when moving rocks, working in and around rockslide areas, falling and bucking trees, and working around machinery.
