Summary

This position is being filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority and is open to U.S. citizens and nationals who meet all eligibility requirements, including permanent and exclusive residency within the defined vicinity of the field unit as described in this announcement. Under this authority, veterans' preference and traditional rating and ranking procedures do not apply.
Performs routine and emergency maintenance on approximately 3.5 miles of trail, including tread repair, drainage improvements, erosion control, step reconstruction, wall stabilization, and debris removal.
Operates and maintains a variety of hand and power tools including rock bars, sledgehammers, drills, saws, compactors, and other construction equipment.
Constructs, repairs, and stabilizes dry-stack and mortared rock walls; resets stone steps; repairs stone retaining structures; and maintains drainage features such as culverts, water bars, and headwalls.
Constructs and repairs wooden trail features including steps, staircases, boardwalks, landings, bridges, railings, fencing, and small structural supports.
Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work approximately 25 pay periods (54 weeks), and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year. This announcement has 2 positions with separate non-pay periods. Physical Demands: Heavy physical exertion is frequently required in bending, lifting, and using hand and power tools in trail work. Examples of typical strenuous activity, include frequently lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 100 pounds., carrying and rolling rocks and logs, moving rocks of several tons with rock bars, using hammers to crush or shape rock, and using shovels extensively; frequently walks up to 20 miles daily; and must not have potential emergency medical problems that could complicate work in remote areas for extended periods of time.
Working Conditions: Incumbent must have the ability to live and work effectively in isolated backcountry areas in close contact with small numbers of people. Incumbent must live and work out-of-doors on projects including mountainous terrain up to 14,000 feet in elevation in all extremes of weather. Trail work is dusty and hazardous conditions may exist when moving rock, working in and around rock slide areas, working around explosives, falling and bucking trees, and working around machinery.
