Major Duties:

  • Lead and perform at the journeyman level in the maintenance, repair, rehabilitation. construction, and stabilization of park trails and related public use facilities throughout Joshua Tree National Park.
  • Responsible for daily on-site decisions concerning workflow and assign and distribution workflow for their crew.
  • Teaches and demonstrates trail maintenance and construction methods and techniques to the crew and volunteers, leads and sets the pace when working alongside them
  • Operates gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment to transport personnel, supplies, materials, tools and equipment to job sites and trailheads.
  • Reports progress of work to the supervisor and makes appropriate recommendations concerning work operations and Issues, including the need for additional on-the-job training for individual employees as necessary.

  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • You must possess and maintain a Non-Wildland Fire National Chainsaw Safety Program Instructor Certification by the closing date of this announcement. (You MUST provide a copy of your certification within your application).
  • You must possess and maintain an open or completed HECM task book by the closing date of this announcement. (You MUST provide a copy of your task book within your application).
  • You must possess and maintain NPS Purchasing card credentials and privileges in your name by the closing date of this announcement. (You MUST provide proof of this within your application).
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 4 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • You must be able to obtain and maintain a Wilderness First Responder and CPR certification within 3 months of entrance on duty.

  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1 year probationary during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated. This probationary period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider:

Additional information

This position will be filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority. Eligibility is limited to applicants who reside within the defined local commuting area at the time of application. For this announcement, the local commuting area is the area from which individuals can reasonably commute to the duty station under normal conditions. The defined vicinity for this position is: San Bernadino, CA County and Riverside, CA County. See the Required Documents section for information on how to verify current residence.

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected the display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is required in bending, lifting, and using hand and power tools in trail work. As examples of typical strenuous activity, incumbent:
Frequently hikes up to 20 miles a daily and must be able to so while carrying a backpack, power and or hand tools. Frequently lifts and carries objects weighing up to 100 pounds, must carry and roll rocks and logs, move rocks of several tons with rock bars, use hammers to crush or shape rock, and use shovel extensively. The incumbent frequently walks up to 20 miles daily and must be able to do so at a minimum rate of 3 mile per hour. This position requires the use of personal protective equipment PPE. PPE is equipment used to protect the health of the employee, such as a respirator. The office of Safety and Health Administration OSHA established the requirements of proper wearing and use of respirators. Facial hair, corrective glasses, or goggles that cannot be accommodated with in the respirator or any other condition that interferes with or prevents proper seal or valve function is prohibited. Leather, steel-toed boots are also required in this position. Will be tasked with sitting or standing at a desk for a prolonged period, familiarity and understanding on how to type and operate a mouse and keyboard to navigate the NPS network to conduct reports, spreadsheets, completes purchase log requirements or attend meetings.

Working Conditions: Trail work is dusty, and hazardous conditions may exist when moving rock. Working in and around rockslide areas, working around falling and bucking trees, and working around livestock and machinery. Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 110+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment, paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to biting insects. Terrain is steep and rocky resulting in unusable footing. Hazards include exposure to snake bite, scorpion and wasp stings, sun burn bruises, cuts, scrapes, and cactus thorn punctures.Incumbent will work around heavy equipment that will expose them to high decibel engines for extended periods of time. Certification as a helicopter crew member is not required but highly beneficial for this position.
