Help

As a Maintenance Worker, you will perform the following duties:

  • Utilizes a variety of materials, tools, and equipment associated with the repair and maintenance of structures and grounds.
  • Performs minor plumbing repairs of limited difficulty such as tightening or replacing in-kind fittings and fixtures.
  • Performs minor carpentry repairs of limited difficulty to buildings and quarters.
  • Constructs, installs, repairs and replaces doors, shelves, supply racks, hardware, frame structures, windows, trim and cabinets.
  • Performs routine maintenance at different sites and visitor facilities, to include cleaning restrooms, and making minor repairs as needed.
  • Receives, unloads and processes incoming shipments, reporting discrepancies and damage.
  • Performs painting, masonry work, roofing, welding, or assisting higher grade workers with maintenance of utility systems in the facility.
  • Operates a light truck to pick up supplies and to transport materials to and from work sites.

  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 1 night per month.
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

Additional information

This position will be filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority. Eligibility is limited to applicants who reside within the defined local commuting area at the time of application. For this announcement, the local commuting area is the area from which individuals can reasonably commute to the duty station under normal conditions. The defined vicinity for these positions are:

  • Marrero, Louisiana (BARA) is defined as 75 miles from the Jean Lafitte NHP&P - Barataria Preserve located at 6588 Barataria Boulevard, Marrero, Louisianna 70072.
  • Chalmette, Louisiana (CHAL) is defined as 75 miles from the Jean Lafitte NHP&P - Chalmette Battlefield and National Cemetery located at 1 Battlefield Road, Chalmette, Louisiana 70043.
  • New Orleans, Louisiana (Headquarters) is defined as 50 miles from the New Orleans Jazz NHP French Quarter Headquarters building located at 419 Decatur Street, New Orleans, Louisiana 70130.
  • Thibodaux, Louisiana (WACC) is defined as 75 miles from the Jean Lafitte NHP&P - Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center located at 314 St. Mary's Street, Thibodaux, Louisiana 70301.
Residency will be verified during the hiring process.

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected the display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

Physical Demands: Works from ladders, scaffolds and platforms and where surfaces to be coated, or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach that require incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds.

Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside where dirt, spray, and fumes are present. Also required to work in inclement weather and/or wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.
