This position is being filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority and is open to U.S. citizens and nationals who meet all eligibility requirements, including permanent and exclusive residency within the defined vicinity of the field unit as described in this announcement. Implements established natural resource management projects. Following instructions and standardized procedures, collects and organizes field data.
Makes field observations of natural resource conditions. Evaluates observed conditions and problems and makes preliminary determinations on the cause of problems noted.
Assists in the preparation of reports, plans, and guidelines.
Installs, operates, and maintains resource management equipment.
Provides advice, assistance, and training to students, student conservation assistants, and volunteers involved in resource management projects and field research.
Utilizes a variety of computer programs to compile, reduce, store, retrieve, analyze, and report data and other resource management information.
Provides information to other employees and visitors about the natural resource management program
GS/7:
Organizes, schedules, and executes a wide variety of established natural resource management projects. Collects and organizes field data using standardized data collection procedures and equipment; uses judgment to apply precedents and established techniques to new situations.
Makes field observations of natural resource conditions. Recommends management actions based on prescribed guidelines in existing park plans.
Prepares draft project reports which include literature research, descriptions of methods, preliminary data analysis, graphs and charts, results, and recommendations for planning, protection, and mitigation activities.
Provides logistical support and area orientation for contract or cooperating scientists.
Installs, operates, and maintains resource management equipment. Inventories equipment, evaluates quality assurance compliance, and calibrates equipment as necessary.
Provides advice, assistance, and training to students, student conservation assistants, and volunteers involved in resource management projects and field research.
Utilizes a variety of computer programs to compile, reduce, store, retrieve, analyze, and report data and other resource management information.
Provides information to other employees and visitors about the natural resource management program.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: Have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in the federal service. Specialized experience demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of this position. Specialized experience includes organizing program data and information; applying/performing a variety of manual, mechanical, and chemical methods to manage forest health threats; performing basic vegetation inventories, studies, and surveys; and participating in vegetation management through seed collection, planting, propagating, and weeding. You must include start/end dates and hours worked per week.
-OR- EDUCATION: Successful completed one full year (18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours) of graduate level study at an accredited college or university that directly applies to the position such as Agronomy, Crop Science, Botany, Silviculture, Horticulture, etc. NOTE: If you are qualifying based in part, upon education, you MUST submit a copy of your transcripts.
-OR- COMBINATION: Have a combination of specialized experience and graduate education as described above that when combined equal 100% of the minimum requirements. For example, six (6) months specialized experience 50%, and nine (9) semesters of graduate education directly related or 50% and when combined equal 100%. To combine education and experience, first take the amount of completed graduate level education and convert it to a percentage of the full requirement. Then take the number of months of full-time experience and divide it by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. This position will be filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority. Eligibility is limited to applicants who reside within the defined local commuting area at the time of application. For this announcement, the local commuting area is the area from which individuals can reasonably commute to the duty station under normal conditions. The defined vicinity for this position is: 65 Miles from Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site at 564 County Road 37 Stanton, ND 58571. Residency will be verified during the hiring process.

Physical Demands: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required. Heavy items (e.g., equipment and packs up to 50 pounds) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis.
