Help

  • Prepare and monitor an annual operating budget for maintenance and facility operation.
  • Supervise carpentry trade worker(s) in the construction, alteration, modification or repair of a wide range of features in buildings.
  • Supervises plumbers tasked with installation, modification and repair of new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems and water closets, tubs, fire sprinkler systems, and showers.
  • Supervises HVAC operational, maintenance and construction activities. Ensures staff perform scheduled preventative maintenance work on HVAC equipment.
  • Oversees the placement of finishes on a variety of interior and exterior surfaces of offices, buildings, other structures, and equipment. Supervises all painting, varnishing, etc. functions to include marbling, graining, speckling, tinting, and toning of paint, and matching existing colors.
  • Supervisory tasks include, but not limited to, hiring subordinates, establishing performance plans and standards, employee counseling and personnel actions, distribution of workload, quality control inspections, time keeping, completing requests for leave and completing Department of the Interior mandated training.

  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • Depending upon the park, occupancy of government quarters may be required.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.

As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you may be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
  1. Ability to Lead or Supervise (SCREEN OUT) The Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor is able to perform the full range of Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor tasks listed under close supervision. The Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor performs duties such as: (1) leading workers in proper trades and labor methods in the maintenance and repair of facilities; (2) instructing others in the plans, blueprints, materials, and tools needed to maintain historic non-residential structures; (3) performing with installation, maintenance, repair and construction work in building maintenance trades, such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry, HVAC, roofing and/or painting; (4) complying with safety program directives to ensure a safe work environment.

A Recruitment Incentive May Be Authorized for a newly selected employee when appointed to a permanent, temporary, or term position. A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.

Physical Demands: A typical schedule would find the incumbent directing major and minor building repairs, preserving historic structures, snow removal operations, emergency response, acting as contracting officer's representative on complex new projects, repairs, and rehabilitation on historically significant park features, etc. Incumbent supervises complex maintenance and construction programs involving a large and culturally diverse group of employees.

Working Conditions: The Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor supervises a work force that is spread over a large and diverse park area. The incumbent is sometimes required to travel to remote job sites. The program operates in a broad, topographically diverse, geographic area consisting of more than 1.2 million acres, with elevations ranging from 2,200 to 8,000 feet. Terrain requires movement of people and supplies by helicopter, mule, river raft, motor vehicle and foot. Construction and maintenance are performed throughout the year. Project duration may be from one day to six months and involve a variety of trade skills. Employees work a variety of schedules, including a standard of nine (9) days on and five (5) days off schedule, but emergencies may dictate continuous work of up to 30 days.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.

Documentation for the Land Management Workforce Flexibility Act (LMWFA) eligibility, submission of ALL SF-50s and performance information for each period of temporary/term employment that qualifies for LMWFA. Performance documentation can be obtained by contacting the supervisors for the positions you served in during your 24 months. If they did not complete performance appraisals ask them to provide a statement of performance for each period of service. The statement must specify the dates for each employment period and your level of performance (dates should match the dates on the SF-50s).
