This position is for an experienced Maintenance Test Pilot who serves as a subject matter expert for rotary-wing aircraft coming out of phase or other major maintenance events, such as preventative maintenance inspection flight testing. They will serve as the primary Maintenance Test Pilot responsible for overseeing and managing the maintenance testing program for Air and Marine Operations (AMO) locations.

This position starts at a salary of $120,381.00 (GS-13, Step 1) to $156,498.00 (GS-13, Step 10).

Typical work responsibilities include:

  • Performing maintenance test flights of rotary and fixed-wing aircraft to determine that the airframe, power plant and power train, subsystems accessories, and other auxiliary equipment are functioning in component changes, such as engines, transmission rotor blades, and avionics modification packages.
  • Developing, writing, and reviewing flight test policies, procedures, and requirements to improve maintenance test approaches Identifies the necessary components of a maintenance flight test team, secures resources for all test activities, and oversees and ensures complete test execution while implementing recommendations for improving related training.
  • Developing, writing, and reviewing maintenance test cards, directing and performing the ground/flight/underway testing for rotary and or fixed-wing aircraft.
  • Performing ferry flights of aircraft to support installation maintenance activities.
  • Motor Vehicle Operation: You must possess the ability to operate a Government Owned Vehicle. A valid, non-restricted driver's license is required
  • Uniform: You are required to wear an officially approved uniform while in duty status.
  • Medical/physical: Successful candidates must meet the medical standards and physical requirements for the position. Any medical or psychiatric condition that could affect the ability of the individual to safely and efficiently perform the functions of the position may result in medical disqualification. Medical standards and physical requirements may include, but are not limited to, vision, hearing, and lifting requirements. Determinations are made on a case-by case basis.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • 1. A current FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate with the following ratings: airplane, single engine and multi-engine land and instrument; OR rotorcraft helicopter and instrument. Appropriate U.S. military ratings may be substituted. Other certificates that meet or exceed the requirements of the Commercial Pilot Certificate are also acceptable (e.g., an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate).
  • 2. A current FAA Class II Medical Certificate is acceptable for applicants who currently occupy Customs and Border Protection Air Interdiction Agent positions. For initial entry or re-entry into the occupation, a current FAA Class II Medical Certificate is acceptable for application purposes; however you MUST have a Class I by the time of your interview.
  • 3. A documented log reflecting a minimum of 1500 hours total flight time, 75 hours instrument, 75 hours night, and 250 hours pilot-in-command.
You must also possess the required specialized experience:

Experience: You qualify for the GS-13 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:
  • Providing expert knowledge of rotary and fixed-wing aircraft coming out of phase inspections or other major maintenance events.
  • Providing expert advise on post-maintenance flight testing and technical assistance to managements readiness to flight programs.
  • Providing technical guidance and review of tests, workload acceptance,
  • Developing, writing, and reviewing flight test policies, procedures, and requirements.

You must:
  • Meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process; and
  • Meet all applicable Time in Grade requirements (current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent grade band in the federal service) by 10/10/2025.
