Duties

Help

As the Engineering Equipment Operator (Supervisory), the incumbent is responsible for the accomplishment of maintenance activities on BLM access roads located in the assigned area. Included is the responsibility in the overall technical quality of all work performed, as well as the condition and appearance of the roadway and right-of-way. Ensures proper use and maintenance of all assigned equipment both light and heavy-duty equipment, such as gasoline or diesel power tractors, trucks and motor graders as well as hand tools and other equipment.

The incumbent is responsible for planning the daily work of the crew and equipment as well as the methods and procedures to be used for all assigned maintenance activities. Adjusts work assignments of subordinates to take the best-advantage of weather conditions, time, manpower and equipment available.

The incumbent also must possess the ability to operate all assigned equipment at the journeyman level and routinely operate gasoline, diesel powered motor graders, dump trucks, loaders, bulldozers, backhoe, brush cutter, sweeper, excavator, roller, chip spreader, and various hand operated tools.

Qualifications

There is no required length of time of qualifying experience or training. However, your resume must demonstrate enough experience to support the SCREEN-OUT Element of: Your ability to lead and supervise in performing the duties of a Engineering Equipment Operator (Supervisory) without more than normal supervision. Examples of such experience include: (1) leading and/or training other employees in the operation and repair of gasoline or diesel-powered engineering and construction equipment such as road graders, tractors with bulldozer or angle dozer blades, front- end loaders, excavators, backhoes, wheel loader, trench diggers, and large industrial tractors with pan or scraper attachments in all terrain environments; (2) planning the daily work of the crew and equipment including the methods and procedures to be used for all assigned maintenance activities; (3) instructing in preventative maintenance and minor repairs to diesel or gasoline powered equipment such as trucks, tractors, loaders, and motor graders.; (4) reading blueprints, work orders/instructions, maps, technical guides, and construction stakes to carry-out construction projects related to road work.

Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is required in constantly climbing in and out of different machines and pushing and pulling levers continuously while machine is in operation. Work is strenuous because of the large equipment operated, the adjustments made, and the adverse operating conditions. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. The incumbent is required to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds and often puts forth similar effort when pushing, pulling, turning, and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment, and tools.

Working Conditions: The operation of large and complicated gasoline or diesel-powered engineering and construction equipment in difficult circumstances increases exposure and risk of injury. The incumbent works both inside and outside and is exposed to hot and humid weather and/or extremely cold weather with temperatures ranging from below 0 to above 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Ice, road oils, and other items such as loose gravel and rocks may create hazardous conditions. The operator is subjected to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, oils, solvents, and fumes from motors and exhausts. When working inside, the incumbent must ensure proper ventilation to minimize fumes caused by equipment or vehicles. The incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, abrasions, bruises, and strains while servicing and operating equipment. The incumbent is required to follow all prescribed safety practices and use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as protective hearing devices and hard hats to prevent injury. Protective clothing and safety equipment must also be worn while exposed to hazardous conditions.
