The BLS headquarters is currently located in Washington, D.C. but is in the process of relocating within the National Capital Area to the Suitland Federal Center in Suitland, Maryland. If selected for the Washington, D.C. location, your assigned duty station will be Washington, D.C with the option to telework from an approved telework site within the locality pay area of Washington, D.C./Baltimore/Arlington while the future headquarters is being built. Upon completion of the new headquarters offices in Suitland, MD, you will be required to report onsite to the Suitland Federal Center for some portion of each pay period after receiving notification to do so. The purpose of the position is to provide qualifying students the opportunity to gain work experience in the field of mathematical statistics. Assignments are designed to provide training and experience in applying mathematical and statistical methods and techniques to BLS programs, activities, and research methods. Typical duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Works with higher graded staff in support of programs and activities in the assigned organization
  • Performs a variety of routine data collection interviews designed to provide experience and familiarization with BLS survey methods, practices and programs
  • Makes follow-up contacts to respondents for small enterprises who provide a limited amount of data by mail, telephone, or fax to insure accurate and timely survey results
  • Prepares end of survey reports which provide a synopsis of collection experiences
  • Assists in miscellaneous office duties (i.e. filing, typing, answering phones, etc.) as necessary
The advancement of Interns to higher-graded positions, prior to conversion, is strictly at the agency's discretion. To qualify for promotions, the Interns must have the same level and type of experience and/or education usually required for an initial appointment.

  • Must be at least 16 years old and a U.S. Citizen.
  • Candidate required to obtain the necessary security/investigation level.
  • Requires a trial period for the duration of the Internship.
  • Appointees must sign a DOL pathways Program Participant agreement.
  • Must be enrolled at least half-time at a qualifying educational institution at the time of appointment and must maintain such enrollment throughout the duration of the appointment.
  • Must be in good academic standing as defined by the agency as 2.0 GPA or higher.
  • This is a temporary student internship appointment not to exceed 12 weeks. Appointment may be extended in up to one-year increments.

Qualifications

ALL PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY AND QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET BY THE COSING DATE OF THIS ANNOUNCEMENT.

To be eligible for the DOL Pathways - Internship Program, an individual must be enrolled and seeking a degree (e.g. diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution/program on a full or half-time basis for current semester. Additional proof of enrollment for the upcoming semester will be required before a final job offer can be extended. Click here for a definition of a qualifying education institution/program. Applicants for this position must meet the definition of a CURRENTLY ENROLLED STUDENT as outlined throughout this announcement. If you do not meet this definition, you will not be considered.

Must Possess and maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher on the unweighted 4.0 scale. GPA is based on current enrollment.

Applicants who graduate from their degree seeking programs in the current semester can be considered for internships only if they are enrolled and/or accepted for enrollment in the upcoming semester in a proceeding degree seeking program.

For GS-4: Completion of 2 full academic years of post-high school study or an associate's degree education above high school.

One full academic year of undergraduate; graduate; vocational; trades; technical or high school education is the number of credit hours determined by the college, university, or school to represent 1 year of full-time study. The high school curriculum must be approved by a State or local governing body. All education beyond high school must be accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Interns may be non-competitively converted to a term, career-conditional or career appointment within *120 days following the successful completion of all of their educational and work experience requirements in accordance with 5 CFR 362.204. *Expanded to 180 days effective 6/11/24 based on OPM final rule https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2024/04/12/2024-06810/pathways-programs

Education

An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in an accredited college or university.

You must submit an academic transcript from your academic institution showing the date that you most recently completed the academic requirements described above. See the Required Documents section of this announcement. If you do not submit a transcript indicating your possession of the required education, you will not be considered for this position.

  • Be a United States Citizen.

  • Complete their degree or certificate requirements.
  • Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted.

  • Agencies may waive up to 320 of the required 640 hours of work for Interns who demonstrate high potential as evidenced by outstanding academic achievement and exceptional job performance.

Schedule: Interns are eligible to work full-time (40 hours per week) or part-time (16 to 32 hours per week).
