Duties

Help

As a Physical Scientist (Environmental), you will:

  • Serve as the Environmental Coordinator and technical lead for environmental responsibilities and activities for assigned Transmission Field Services' Districts.
  • Provide scientific and technical leadership to the Region to achieve regulatory compliance and remedy potential problems.
  • Recommend necessary improvements to BPA facilities, practices, and procedures to the appropriate officials.
  • Prepare and coordinate toxic substance, hazardous material, and dangerous waste compliance reports for regional facilities.
  • Conduct periodic assessments of regional facilities for environmental compliance.
  • Accompany Federal, state, and local regulatory officials during environmental audit/inspections of BPA district facilities.
  • Undertake investigations and cleanups of BPA sites.
  • Monitor Federal, state and local environmental laws and regulators for regulatory compliance as they pertain to BPA's transmission facilities and practices.

  • This position does not support remote work. You will be required to report physically to the official reporting worksite as specified by the supervisor, but no less than 2 days per pay period.
  • This position requires a valid driver's license as a condition of employment.
  • Frequent overnight travel (11 or more days of overnight travel per month for field work).
  • Fieldwork requires moderate physical exertion including hiking through BPA rights of way, which includes very steep and uneven terrain. The work involves lifting and positioning generators weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Exposure to hazardous substances and various types of contamination may occur. Protective clothing and respiratory equipment are required when appropriate.
  • The work is performed in a variety of weather conditions.
  • After employment, this position may be subject to periodic physical examinations, as prescribed by competent medical authority and at BPA expense, if exposed to health hazards.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENT:

A. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
or
B. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-12) in the Federal service.

Specialized experience for this position is defined as: Experience 1) providing scientific expertise in the planning and implementation of pollution prevention and abatement projects and programs; 2) applying knowledge of Federal, State, and local laws and environmental regulations related to waste management and pollution prevention; AND 3) conducting environmental investigations, cleanups, sampling and monitoring.

Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience
