Salary Range: $29.45- $34.50 per hour

Career-Seasonal positions and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal positions includes all the benefits of permanent employment but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectees will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectees are guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. Non-pay status varies upon Park locations.

The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Operates gasoline or diesel powered engineering and construction equipment with wheeled or crawler type traction, such as road graders, tractors with bulldozer or angle dozer blades, front-end loaders, excavators, backhoes, wheel loader, trench diggers, and large industrial tractors with pan or scraper attachments.
  • Operates motor grader up to and including the Caterpillar 16/160 or John Deer 772 (or equivalent), with up to 16-foot blade.
  • Operates dozer up to and including a Caterpillar D-9 (or equivalent). Dozers may have straight, angle or multiple way blades and rippers.
  • Operates a variety of industrial type wheel or track loaders (e.g., Caterpillar 988 size) and backhoes (e.g., Case 580 size (or equivalent) with a 1/2 cubic yard to 6 cubic yard buckets.
  • Operates up to 14 cubic yard straight dump trucks or truck tractor with belly or side dump trailers for the purpose of moving dirt, blacktop and coarse materials for roadway and shoulder, hauling riprap, barriers and logs.

  • You must possess and maintain a current Class A (or higher) Commercial Driver's License with no Air Brake Restriction. You must also possess or obtain within 180 days a tanker endorsement.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

  1. Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT)
  2. Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair etc.
  3. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
  4. Use of Measuring Equipment.
  5. Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading).
  6. Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment.
  7. Knowledge of Materials.

A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.

Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is used in constantly reaching, turning, and bending and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate different sets of controls to operate the equipment and attachments. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. The work is strenuous because of the generally larger pieces of equipment and the requirement for more frequent adjustments under more adverse operating conditions.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in all kinds of weather, often in an open driver's seat or platform, on hills, slopes, grades, and rolling surfaces. Operators are exposed to increased injury risk due to the larger more complicated equipment and environment that the work is performed in. They are exposed to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, and fumes from the motor and exhaust.

Telework: The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.

Housing: Government housing MAY be available.
