Help

Serves as Museum Curator for Pipe Spring National Monument. Provides overall professional and technical direction for the museum collection program, plans for and develops recommendations for programming priorities of all museum management functions, and ensures that NPS and professionally recognized procedures are applied in all operations. The collections cover a combination of disciplines, including archeology, history (including recent history), and archives, as well as collections associated with historic furnished interior spaces. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Collections. Maintains all record keeping and documentation for museum collections; maintains automated collections management data using NPS-wide systems and according to NPS museum standards; develops reports; provides interpretive and reference services; maintains proper preservation, security and fire protection, and collection storage conditions; monitors, controls and maintains the environment for collections; and manages an integrated pest management program.
  • Exhibits. Plans and implements proper curatorial procedures for on-site and outside exhibits, including implementation of loan paperwork; implements procedures to preserve and protect objects while on exhibit.
  • Research. Conducts research necessary to identify and/or authenticate museum objects, to obtain necessary catalog data, to develop new techniques for collection preservation, and to determine legal status (e.g. copyright); assists researchers (both park staff and public) with collection inquiries and determines appropriateness of information release
  • Education. Assists in the general visitor services program of the unit when called upon; develops interpretive and educational programs using the museum collections. Work with partner group/other park divisions on Artist in Residence and other art and collection based outreach projects

You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home occasionally overnight. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purpose.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-04/05/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess the following qualifications:

BASIC REQUIREMENT:

  1. Degree: museum work; or in an applicable subject-matter field. - OR -
  2. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major, as shown in 1 above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. - OR -
  3. Four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study as shown in 1 above.
- AND -

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: experience providing direction over extensive museum collections and carrying out responsibilities in the four museum functions: collections, exhibits, research, and education. Experience may include collections management (in the areas of archeology, ethnology, history, archives, biology, geology, and paleontology), registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, or conservation of collections of museum material, or other experience related to this position. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least three (3) years progressively higher level graduate education (54 semester/81 quarter hours) leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree (fields of study such as archeology, ethnology, history, archives, biology, geology, and paleontology, or other courses related to this position). You must include transcripts.

COMBINATION:
Higher level graduate education and experience may be combined to meet the specialized experience requirement. Example 6 months of specialized experience (50% of experience required) plus completion of twenty-seven (27) semester hours of graduate education (50% of education requirement), for a total 100% or more. I have provided copies of all my transcripts for verification that include hours and grades from an accredited U.S. college/university.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Additional information

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.

Employer paid and reimbursed relocation expenses are considered taxable income. The NPS does not provide tax, legal or accounting advice. Employees should consult professional tax, legal and accounting advisors regarding concerns about the financial implications of a Permanent Change of Station (PCS).

Physical Demands: The work requires mental alertness, better than average manual dexterity, and mobility. Although primarily sedentary, inspections and operations evaluations involve activities demanding a certain amount of exertion such as walking, climbing, crawling, lifting of heavy objects, bending, stooping, and reaching. Working with collections can involve prolonged exposure to hazardous materials and equipment. Working with lighting systems, environmental control systems, and alarm systems can involve exposure to electrical current and the use of power tools with physical hazards. The work entails the ability to concentrate for long periods of time.

Working Conditions: Most of the work is performed in an office and storage or laboratory facility. Frequent visits are made to the library, visitor center, and other museums in the park. The incumbent makes occasional field trips to the backcountry. Some travel to other facilities and museums, as well as to training and professional meetings is required.


The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
