Summary

This position is located in the Office of the Pardon Attorney (PARDON). PARDON, in consultation with the Attorney General or his designee, assists the President in the exercise of executive clemency. PARDON receives all petitions for executive clemency, initiates the necessary investigations, and prepares the recommendation to the President in connection with the consideration of all forms of executive clemency including pardon, commutation of sentence, remission of fine, and reprieve.

The primary purpose of the Legal Assistant position is to provide The Office of the Pardon Attorney (PARDON) staff with essential clerical and administrative legal support services and correspondence management.

  • Handles all electronic and hard copy correspondence submitted to the Pardon Attorney and management team
  • Determines the nature of correspondence, advises the appropriate staff member, and/or resolves the correspondence matter with the customer when appropriate
  • Drafts correspondence based on established PARDON practices and principles
  • Ensures correspondence management functions are carried out in a manner that supports docketing
  • Responds to highly confidential clemency records
  • Performs initial case processing docketing

  • You must be a United States Citizen or National.
  • You will be required to complete a pre-employment security investigation and background check which includes a drug screening.
  • You may be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • Selective Service registration is required for males born on or after 12/31/1959. Those not registered should have an approved exemption on file.

Qualifications

To qualify for the position of Legal Assistant, (GS-0986-7/8), you must possess the required specialized experience specific to the series and grade you are applying to.

For the GS-07
Specialized Experience:
For the GS-07, you must have one year of specialized experience at the GS-06 grade level or equivalent pay band in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is defined as: Assisting with legal research; Providing administrative support to a team of attorneys; AND Utilizing office automation software applications to produce legal documents or materials.

For the GS-08
Specialized Experience: For the GS-08, you must have one year of specialized experience at the GS-07 grade level or equivalent pay band in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is defined as: Maintaining legal case files or records in an automated case management system; Locating pertinent statutes, court decisions, legal opinions, or other legal documents; AND Drafting legal correspondence, memos, or technical materials appropriate for the intended audience.
