Archaeologists in the National Park Service develop, administer, supervise, or conduct scientific studies of the tangible products (artifacts, structures, sites, etc.) of the past, seeking to develop valid knowledge of the how and why of human behavior of the past within the context of the natural and cultural settings in which it occurred. They are concerned with all time periods of human occupation of the United States or other geographical areas of the world, from earliest prehistoric time to the relatively recent past. Archaeologists conduct archeological field investigations and laboratory analysis, prepare interpretative materials, and use specialized techniques, such as analysis of animal or plant remains. They also supervise the activities of others engaged in such work. They frequently function to integrate results (either their own or those of others) into park environmental assessments, impact statements, operational programs, historic preservation compliance reports, and varied types of other planning documents. Archeologists also engage in the stabilization and physical preservation of ruined and prehistoric buildings and structures.
The incumbent applies professional knowledge and skills to the solution of problems generally concerned with archeological work. They deal with archeological resource identification, documentation, protection, interpretation, and preservation; carry out or assist in limited scope monitoring, survey, testing, and excavating archeological sites; perform lab work and managing of field data; and produce small-scale reports. The incumbent assists with establishing and maintaining continuing relationships with individual members of the public, contractors, permit holders, tribal representatives, city, county, and state officials, and other federal agencies and educators.
Assembles bibliographies and acquaints park staff with recent archeological scholarship pertinent to the Center's resources and themes. Summarizes and interprets highly technical material for park staff. Participates in various events (professional and public) for the purpose of exchanging information and advancing advocacy for archeological resource stewardship.
The incumbent assists in consulting with Native American Tribes to develop mitigation measures for projects affecting Traditional Cultural Properties. They recommend goals, objectives, and plans to direct the long-range protection and management of important cultural resources. The incumbent may also assist in development of temporary exhibits and repair or refinement of permanent exhibits; provide customer service to visitors in the park, on the telephone, and during periodic roving assignments; meet and greet park visitors, and provide helpful information about the park and community to ensure visitors have an enjoyable experience; and assist with management of park museum collection's three-dimensional artifacts.
Determines research needs and coordinates efforts toward obtaining research through various programs, grants, and contracts. Reviews archeological research project proposals, scopes of work, and task directives prepared for planning and other management purposes, including resources management plans. Serves as the Contracting Officer's Technical Representative for projects conducted through contracts, interagency agreements, and cooperative agreements.
Serves as an subject manner expert and advisor to park management on archeological resources.
Incorporates appropriate GIS technology into job to provide comprehensive and scientifically sound answers to inquiries from managers and others. Uses automatic methods of data collection, analysis, or illustration. Inputs data into digital form and uses computer applications for data analysis, manipulation, and presentation.
Makes significant contributions to the preparation of historic preservation documentation, compliance, and background materials for clearances, permits, licenses, etc., as required by Section 106 and Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), Archeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA), National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA), NPS Management Policies, and cultural resources management guideline for planning and construction projects that involve cultural resources for all park undertakings.
Represents the superintendent when working with others on archeological matters. Develops and maintains liaisons and effective working relations with related groups and individuals, agencies, and the public.
