Summary

Help

This position is in the National Park Service Midwest Region Natural Resource Stewardship and Science division. The employee serves as crew member for the Great Lakes Invasive Plant Management Team (IPMT) field crew working on invasive plant management involving the use of manual removal, biological control, and pesticide application.

The employee will perform non-native plant control involving the use of herbicides, hand tools, and chainsaws. The employee will make educated decisions and/or use troubleshooting abilities. They make decisions in the field, while working with other seasonal employees, volunteers, and partners. The individual is expected to collect data using a GPS unit and must be able to identify non-native and native plants in the field. They may be responsible for handling details regarding vehicle care, pesticides, spray equipment, chainsaws, fieldwork documentation and data integrity, as well as planning and scheduling of activity.

The duties of this position require the employee to be in good physical condition. Considerable time will be spent driving with a trailer, hiking in hazardous terrain with a pack, and using tools and equipment. Field time will subject the employee to biting insects, contact with poison ivy and extreme weather conditions ranging from 100 degree F in the summer to below freezing in the winter. Occasional time will also be spent in an office environment reviewing files, data, and transcribing information. Mental alertness, stability, and tact are required. This position requires extended travel away from home including camping in backcountry conditions. Travel by motorboat and canoe is possible.

Extensive travel is required. Employees will be required to work wed-wed (8-10hr days) approximately May through October, changing to Mon-Fri. the remainder of the year. Duties require the employee to be in good physical condition. Special working conditions include: Considerable time will be spend driving, hiking in hazardous terrain, using tools and equipment. Field time will subject employee to extreme weather conditions and insect outbreaks.

  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 16 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Within nine (9) months of employment, new employees must obtain pesticide applicator licenses in the states of Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Minnesota in core, right-of-way/natural areas, and aquatic categories.
  • Within nine(9) months of employment, new employees must obtain chainsaw certifications as S212 intermediate FAL2, or National Chainsaw Safety Program (NCPS) working faller level certification.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-09/11/2022-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

To qualify for this position at the GS-5 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience for this position is work involving one or more aspects of field based natural resource management such as: implements established natural resource management projects; following instructions and standardized procedures, collects and organizes field data. Ensures adequate quality control of data collected. Records all data collected including spatial data and photopoints. Provides preliminary assessment and classification of the information. Evaluates observed conditions and problems, and makes preliminary determinations on the cause of problems noted. Assists in the preparation of reports, plans and guidelines. Draft project reports may include literature research, descriptions of methods, preparation of graphs and charts, and summary of findings. You must include years, months and hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: successfully completed at least four years of education above high school (120 semester hour or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or 24 semester hours of course work in a related field of scientific study, such as in biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, mathematics, wildlife biology, or other directly-related subject matter.

Physical Demands: Duties require the employee be in good physical condition. Prolonged standing, walking, hiking, bending is often required. Heavy items (e.g., equipment and packs up to 50 pounds) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis.

Working Conditions: Travel for this position will be extensive, up to 50% of the time. Considerable time will be spent driving, hiking in hazardous terrain, using tools and equipment. Field work includes exposure to extreme weather conditions and terrain, pesticides, poisonous plants, biting insects, and wild animals.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
