As a full performance GS-15 Physicist, you will:

  • Direct a program that conducts basic research in experimental Cosmic Frontier discovery measurements, including the publication of research findings in archival peer-reviewed journals.
  • Prepare, justify, and support the portions of the Office's budget relating to experimental Cosmic Frontier discovery measurements.
  • Evaluate contractor, Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory, and grantee research proposals and performance via own scientific and technical judgment, merit review, site visits and reviews, and panel reviews.
  • Conceive, justify, plan, initiate, manage, and coordinate the precision measurement aspects of the Cosmic Frontier program, consisting of a broad range of experimental approaches to scientific discovery in core research areas.
  • Develop and prepare analytical documents to communicate with top management of DOE and higher echelons of government on the status of programmatic phases and new developments and opportunities in a broad range of experimental Cosmic Frontier science.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  1. Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.

    or

  2. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS GS-14: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-13) in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as:

  1. Providing input toward planning, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of programs and projects in the area of high energy particle physics or closely related research areas, including but not limited to cosmology and particle astrophysics.
  2. Providing recommendations on the development, coordination, and organization of funding allocations.
  3. Representing an office and meeting with senior management officials, university, laboratory, and professional groups on scientific research and technology R&D issues.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS GS-15: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-14) in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as:
  1. Organizing independent peer reviews, recommending funding allocations, monitoring scientific progress of high energy particle physics research and/or scientific research areas, including but not limited to cosmology or particle astrophysics.
  2. Planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating research program and projects in the area of high energy physics.
  3. Consulting with scientific personnel both nationally and internationally on sensitive issues and complex areas of importance such as strategic planning or coordination of collaborative research and technology R&D.
