Help

The major duties of the Supervisory Archaeologist position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide professional leadership in the field of archeology and archeological resource management for all units of the National Park System.
  • Plan, develop, and manage budgets and supervise program participation in the Federal budget planning effort.
  • Supervise a staff of permanent and term-appointed employees, contractors, and interns.
  • Represent the Director in overseeing, budgeting, reporting on, and evaluating service-wide archeological activities, and establishes priorities and direction for the NPS Park Archeology Program.
  • Serve as the Bureau's principal expert on archeological matters, provide oversight, policy development, guidance, and interpretation in the field of archeological resource management for all units of the National Park System.
  • Serve as Departmental Consulting Archeologist

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-07/13/2022-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience.

For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected.

To qualify for the Supervisory Archaeologist position at the GS-14 grade, you must meet the following basic requirements by the closing date of this announcement. You must include transcripts:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

1. Education: Degree that includes 3 semester hours each in the following course areas:

  • History of archeology.
  • Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa.
  • Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development.
  • Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques.
  • Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work.
AND

2. Six semester hours of related course work in:
  • geography, geology, or cultural geography;
  • history, historiography, or historical archeology;
  • environmental studies;
  • scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or
  • surveying;
AND

3. Archeological field school.

AND

4. Related Curriculum: degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements.

OR

5. Combination of Education and Experience: College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education.

OR

6. Experience: Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.

To qualify for the Supervisory Archaeologist position at the GS-14 grade, you must meet the following minimum qualification requirements by the closing date of this announcement:

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:

At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Experience at this level must include all of the following: 1) Conduct and/or oversee archeological research as demonstrated through archeological project management and peer-reviewed research publications; 2) interpret and apply federal laws, regulations, guidelines, and policies related to the management, preservation, and protection of archeological resources; 3) work and communicate with Native American tribes and organizations; 4) prepare and present professionally authoritative written and oral reports related to archeology, to a variety of audiences; 5) practical application of federal land-management laws (such as Archeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA), Section 106, or Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act), policies, and/or practices to archeological tasks. You must include hours per week worked.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies". Experience listed as full-time will be credited at 40 hours per week.


Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To meet basic education requirements, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet basic requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

There is no substitution of education for experience at the grade level(s) of this announcement.

Physical Demands: The work is basically sedentary, but may require the incumbent to attend meetings, conferences, and project inspections in the field. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

Working Conditions: This environment involves normal everyday risks or discomforts typical of office work. Travel and occasional field site visits may also be required.

Relocation Incentive- A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS), to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record is currently located, due to a need to the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
