The incumbent will serve as the Superintendent of Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The Park is the second-largest urban national park and one of the most visited units in the National Park system. The Park stretches over 60 miles end-to-end with 91 miles of bay and ocean shorelines and runs through three counties in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The Superintendent manages all park operations, including a workforce of approximately 400 permanent and temporary staff, in addition to many volunteers, in support of a variety of visitor services, and multiple physical facilities, and administers a large, complex budget plus funds from a variety of other sources, including non-profit partner organizations. Responsibilities include:
Daily collaboration with over 40 in-park partners and numerous external partners, stakeholders, local, state, and federal political officials, friends groups, and other non-profits. The Superintendent must understand local and national political interests and blend political savvy to steer park policies through the numerous individuals and interest groups that use parklands and resources.
Long-range planning and the establishment of strategic and short-range and long-range objectives, goals, and standards of operations.
Responsible for preserving and protecting the area's natural, scenic, and cultural values. Maintains and operates a complex inventory of park physical facilities. Implements cooperative agreements, contracts, special use permits, leases, and land protection plans that define the park's relationship with a variety of partners and commercial interests.
Provides leadership in the development of policies, standards, and procedures which govern the professional conduct of work related to the administration and implementation of the programs.
Manages and directs the park's partnerships and public awareness programs, encompassing concessions, public use management, stewardship, and community outreach.
Provides coordination, leadership, and direction to the U.S. Park Police (USPP).
Responsible for the planning, development, and operation of a comprehensive education and interpretive program.
Plans, manages, and directs the maintenance, repair, rehabilitation, and operation of all facilities in the park including historic and cultural structures, walks, trails, specimen trees, natural wilderness areas, beaches, wetlands, roads, parking, housing, and cultural landscapes.
You must be able to obtain/maintain a Top Secret clearance. Selectees may be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use.
Males must meet Selective Service Registration Act requirements.
You will be required to make occasional travel.
Selections are subject to Department approval. Initial appointments to the SES must have ECQs certified by an Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Review Board before the appointment and will be required to serve a one-year probationary period.
Individuals selected for an SES position are subject to reassignment.
Agencies must request OPM approval to appoint the current or former (within five years) Executive Branch political appointees to permanent competitive service, non-political excepted service, or career SES position. Qualifications
We are looking for an individual with a proven track record of working at an executive level with experience in park operations, including interpretation, visitor services, and protection, natural and cultural resources management protection, safety, concessions management, maintenance management, managing teams, possessing strong communication project management skills, has an understanding of and experience with partnerships, philanthropy, tourism, public land management, conservation, outdoor recreation; has attracted and retained a highly skilled and diverse workforce; and has successfully managed a large, geographically dispersed organization.
You must clearly show that you possess the experience, knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of an executive.
